Parent's Night Out at Berea Mennonite Church this Friday (9/6)

While parents are out on the town (or relaxing at home!), kids will have the opportunity to visit four-footed friends, meet the sweetest farmer we know, go on a nature walk, free play in the yard, learn a little chicken chatter, create their own eco-masterpiece, and enjoy their parent-packed supper with new playmates!

$15 for the first child and $5 for each sibling.  All proceeds will go to help finish a new farm building on site (the cooler shed and farm stand) out back and then to the continuing work of the farm.

Register by contacting Leanna Coyle at lcoyle@samford.edu.

East Atlanta Edible Garden and Yard Tour this Sunday (9/8)

Come get fresh with the locals and join us Sunday, September 8th from 4 to 7 PM to explore one of Atlanta's most eclectic and funky neighborhoods through the lens of food and community.  The tour will highlight imaginative and sustainable landscapes that feature food gardens, native plants, exotic foods, farm animals, rainwater catchment systems, and much more.  Public and private spaces will be featured including residential gardens and farms, community gardens, guerrilla orchards, and restaurants.

The tour includes a guided biking option, an herbal garden tonic/lemonade provided by Protea Wild Crafts, and a handmade popsicle by King of Pops. The tour will wrap up with refreshments in The Midway Pub Garden. Chef Travis McClellan and Herbalist Cara-Lee Scheinfeld will provide a seasonal snack and craft cocktail for all tour participants (non-alcoholic option available)!

Come learn, be inspired, and gather tools and resources to transform your home or community space into a thriving edible landscape.  This fundraiser supports the efforts of Community Farmers Markets which strengthen and improve access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food.

Mulch Madness at Burgess-Peterson Academy
BPA

What's just as important to our children as learning?  Taking a short break to get some exercise, sunshine and have a chance to let the lessons sink in.  Burgess-Peterson is lucky enough to have a playground, but the students are in danger of losing their chance to use it.

Why? One word: Mulch.  We need a lot of it. We need a type that's approved by the school district, and it's not cheap, so we need your help. The goal is $2,500 in 30 days.  We'll also need help hauling the mountain of mulch into the playground on a date to be determined.

If you might be able to help, please email mulchmadness@burgesspeterson.com or drop your contact info in the PTA mailbox in the school office.  Cash donations may be dropped in the PTA box in the front office or donate via the Burgess-Peterson PTA Square Market store.  Please forward this notice to friends and family who would like to help our cause.  Donors will be recognized on a bulletin board at school.

Donation levels:

Teacher's pet: $100

Merry-go-round: $75

Monkey bars: $50

Slide: $25

Teeter-totter: $10

Swing: $5

If we exceed the fundraising goal, the extra dollars will go toward other playground-related improvements.  Thank you for your support of the PTA and our students at Burgess-Peterson Academy!

Keep DeKalb Beautiful benefit night at Twain's - September 9th

There is no cover charge and 10% of proceeds from the evening will be donated to Keep DeKalb Beautiful.

Note that Twain's is 21+ after 9 PM, but families are welcome before 9.

September Brownwood Frolic - Watch the Falcons!
Are you ready for some football!?!  Come join your neighbors in Brownwood Park on September 15th as we kick-off Strut week while kicking off with the Falcons in our September installment of the Brownwood Frolic.  We will be firing up the grill so bring your own protein.  EACA will provide the rest, including ice cold beverages.

How will you STRUT your stuff?

It's time to decide how you'll represent the neighborhood in the East Atlanta Strut Parade coming up on Saturday, September 21st! Decorate your bicycle, car, truck or stroller -- or just decorate yourself and put on your strutting shoes. Whether you want to have fun or want to spread the word about your group or business in a unique way, the Strut Parade is the way to go.

Strutting with a group is also a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other milestone. Register here.

Atlanta Sidewalk Maintenance: What's next?
At the recent Sidewalk Maintenance Forum, Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza reported on progress his department had made during the past year.  Public Works has only two sidewalk crews, so the Department's decision to increase use of contractors to repair sidewalks is a good one. We're also glad to know that Public Works had identified $5 million that will be added to the Sidewalk Trust Fund.  Mendoza said that would pay for repairs that would be implemented during the next four years.  That's a big increase over the City's investment in sidewalk maintenance during previous years.  Yet with an estimated $152 million backlog of broken sidewalks and curbs, the City needs to allocate far more than $1.25 million per year to sidewalk maintenance.

Friends of East Atlanta Library needs help with their annual book sale!

FEAL is busy preparing for our biggest fundraiser -- the annual book sale during the East Atlanta Strut.  Not only do we need your book donations, we need your help sorting and taking a shift at the book sale. It's both fun and helps raise the money we need to keep our books and programming top notch. If you would like to sort book donations or take a shift on the day of the Strut, please email friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Thanks to all who have already donated books. We have received some great selections. We will continue to accept gently read and mold-free hardback and paperback books, audiobooks and CDs through September 13th. You may leave your book donations at the EAL circulation desk.
Friday Food for Firefighters

Summer is waning and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!  Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

EASP

Our 60 in 60 promotion is in full swing, with a goal of signing up 60 new members in 60 days.  All new memberships of six months or longer will receive the months of August and September for free.  In addition, the Village Church of East Atlanta has offered to match new memberships during August and September dollar for dollar up to $7,000.  While new residential memberships will still fund residential patrols, the matching funds will go toward patrols of the East Atlanta Village and surrounding streets.  Our primary goal of the new Village patrols is to increase pedestrian safety, but we also expect to see reductions in auto thefts and vehicle break-ins.

Please renew your membership today so that we can continue to reduce crime in East Atlanta.  We have been making steady progress in reducing armed robberies and burglaries in the past five years, but we have more work to do.  There were 221 burglaries in East Atlanta in 2008, but only 51 in 2012.  In 2008, there were 44 pedestrian robberies, which was reduced to 22 in 2012.  We are still not satisfied with these reductions, and think our community can reduce these further.  We are especially concerned with the increase in pedestrian robberies throughout the city in 2013, and while we don't expect to eliminate them completely, we'd like to see the frequency reduced considerably.  This is the reason for our Village Patrol effort, considered our most important new initiative in 2013.
