Join Burgess-Peterson Garden Volunteers on August 30th!
Thanks so much to everyone who came out Saturday. The garden is looking great, and we're now all ready for the next event -- Friday's school-wide planting day.

Help Burgess-Peterson's garden grow!

Burgess-Peterson Academy is growing gardeners and cooking up learning with a courtyard garden, orchard and lessons on how to grow and cook healthy food! August 30th is the second annual school-wide planting day. Between 8:30 and 2, every student will have a chance to plant part of the garden. Volunteers will help the students plant and keep things organized. Come for an hour, come for the day or any amount of time in between. In case you're not familiar with the way this works, each grade plants the same vegetables in a 4x12 garden bed. As the produce is harvested throughout the fall, it is weighed and the amounts are recorded. Whichever grade harvests the most before winter break wins.

Contact BPAGarden@gmail.com for more information or to let us know you're coming. Also, be sure to keep up with the garden on Facebook.

Thanks for your support!
Brownwood Frolic
Are you ready for some football!?!  Come join your neighbors in Brownwood Park on September 15th as we kick-off Strut week while kicking off with the Falcons in our September installment of the Brownwood Frolic.  We will be firing up the grill so bring your own protein.  EACA will provide the rest, including ice cold beverages.

How will you STRUT your stuff?

It's time to decide how you'll represent the neighborhood in the East Atlanta Strut Parade coming up on Saturday, September 21st! Decorate your bicycle, car, truck or stroller -- or just decorate yourself and put on your strutting shoes. Whether you want to have fun or want to spread the word about your group or business in a unique way, the Strut Parade is the way to go.

Strutting with a group is also a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other milestone. Register here.

Atlanta Sidewalk Maintenance: What's next?
At the Sidewalk Maintenance Forum we held recently,Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza reported on progress his department had made during the past year.

Public Works has only two sidewalk crews, so the Department's decision to increase use of contractors to repair sidewalks is a good one. We're also glad to know that Public Works had identified $5 million that will be added to the Sidewalk Trust Fund. Mendoza said that would pay for repairs that would be implemented during the next four years.

That's a big increase over the City's investment in sidewalk maintenance during previous years.Yet with an estimated $152 million backlog of broken sidewalks and curbs, the City needs to allocate far more than $1.25 million per year to sidewalk maintenance.

Atlanta has prioritized sidewalk maintenance so low for decades, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to restart a program that relies on funding from abutting property owners. Flocks described other funding opportunities, including infrastructure bonds or a surcharge on parking spaces.

This is an election year, so PEDS plans to survey Atlanta City Council candidates to find out who supports amending Atlanta's sidewalk ordinance. We also want to know what candidates consider a reasonable timeline for addressing Atlanta's backlog of broken sidewalks.

Do you know of pedestrian-friendly projects, programs or people you'd like PEDS to recognize at the 2013 Golden Shoe Awards Celebration?

If so, please submit your nominations by Tuesday, September 3. Nomination forms are available here along with much more PEDS information.

Friends of East Atlanta Library needs help with their annual book sale!

August and September are FEAL's busiest months as we ready for our biggest fundraiser -- the annual book sale during the East Atlanta Strut.  Not only do we need your book donations, we need your help sorting and taking a shift at the book sale. It's both fun and helps raise the money we need to keep our books and programming top notch. If you would like to sort book donations or take a shift on the day of the Strut, please email friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Thanks to all who have already donated books. We have received some great selections. We will continue to accept gently read and mold-free hardback and paperback books, audiobooks and CDs through September 13th. You may leave your book donations at the EAL circulation desk.

Friday Food for Firefighters

Summer is in full swing and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!  Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed.  Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example:  One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

EASP01

We have begun our 60 in 60 promotion, with a goal of signing up 60 new members in 60 days.  All new memberships of six months or longer will receive the months of August and September for free.  In addition, the Village Church of East Atlanta has offered to match new memberships during August and September dollar for dollar up to $7,000.  While new residential memberships will still fund residential patrols, the matching funds will go toward patrols of the East Atlanta Village and surrounding streets.  Our primary goal of the new Village patrols is to increase pedestrian safety, but we also expect to see reductions in auto thefts and vehicle break-ins.

Please renew your membership today so that we can continue to reduce crime in East Atlanta.  We have been making steady progress in reducing armed robberies and burglaries in the past five years, but we have more work to do.  There were 221 burglaries in East Atlanta in 2008, but only 51 in 2012.  In 2008, there were 44 pedestrian robberies, which was reduced to 22 in 2012.  We are still not satisfied with these reductions, and think our community can reduce these further.  We are especially concerned with the increase in pedestrian robberies throughout the city in 2013, and while we don't expect to eliminate them completely, we'd like to see the frequency reduced considerably.  This is the reason for our Village Patrol effort, considered our most important new initiative in 2013.

The EASP is in need of help via donations to assist in the East Atlanta Village Patrol, particularly in light of the significant incidents that have occurred in East Atlanta in the last month.
