Donate books to Friends of East Atlanta Library annual book sale |
Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) is looking for a lot of gently read books for its big annual fundraising book sale during the EAV Strut on September 21st. The group is accepting book donations now at the East Atlanta Library as long as they are free of mold and in fair condition. Money raised at the FEAL book sale primarily helps fund children's programming and the widely circulated book collections. Library budget cuts over the past few years have eliminated funding for children's programming and with East Atlanta's growing number of younger families with children, maintaining the library's great programs and activities has become one of FEAL's top priorities.
You may bring your books to the circulation desk at the library anytime during regular library hours. If you are interested in supporting the library by becoming a member of FEAL, pick up a brochure and membership form at the circulation desk. If you would like to volunteer to help sort books before the sale (with a chance to get a first peak at the offerings) or work on the day of the book sale, please contact FEAL at friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Summer is in full swing and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters! Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.
Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example: One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.
Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update |

EASP News as of August 11, 2013
We have begun our 60 in 60 promotion, with a goal of signing up 60 new members in 60 days. All new memberships of six months or longer will receive the months of August and September for free. In addition, the Village Church of East Atlanta has offered to match new memberships during August and September dollar for dollar up to $7,000. While new residential memberships will still fund residential patrols, the matching funds will go toward patrols of the East Atlanta Village and surrounding streets. Our primary goal of the new Village patrols is to increase pedestrian safety, but we also expect to see reductions in auto thefts and vehicle break-ins.
Please renew your membership today so that we can continue to reduce crime in East Atlanta. We have been making steady progress in reducing armed robberies and burglaries in the past five years, but we have more work to do. There were 221 burglaries in East Atlanta in 2008, but only 51 in 2012. In 2008, there were 44 pedestrian robberies, which was reduced to 22 in 2012. We are still not satisfied with these reductions, and think our community can reduce these further. We are especially concerned with the increase in pedestrian robberies throughout the city in 2013, and while we don't expect to eliminate them completely, we'd like to see the frequency reduced considerably. This is the reason for our Village Patrol effort, considered our most important new initiative in 2013.
The EASP is in need of help via donations to assist in the East Atlanta Village Patrol, particularly in light of the significant incidents that have occurred in East Atlanta in the last month.
For the week of August 4 - August 10, the following crimes have been reported thus far, plus an aggravated assault for which we have not yet received a report:
- Burglary Thurs, Aug 8 in 700 block of Stokeswood - residence/ 60" Samsung LGE TV, Apple Imac desktop computer / rear door of the house kicked in and left open/no prints.
- Burglary Tues morning, Aug 6 in 1400 block of Glenwood - residence/ TV, computer, camera, iPad/back door kicked in/prints.
- Burglary Mon, Aug 5 in 400 block of Clifton - residence/ bike, tools, bike light, necklace, 2 rings, suitcase, earrings/back door pried open/ prints attempted.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster (404-954-1568). |
