Donate books to Friends of East Atlanta Library annual book sale |
Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) is looking for a lot of gently read books for its big annual fundraising book sale during the EAV Strut on September 21st. The group is accepting book donations now at the East Atlanta Library as long as they are free of mold and in fair condition. Money raised at the FEAL book sale primarily helps fund children's programming and the widely circulated book collections. Library budget cuts over the past few years have eliminated funding for children's programming and with East Atlanta's growing number of younger families with children, maintaining the library's great programs and activities has become one of FEAL's top priorities.
You may bring your books to the circulation desk at the library anytime during regular library hours. If you are interested in supporting the library by becoming a member of FEAL, pick up a brochure and membership form at the circulation desk. If you would like to volunteer to help sort books before the sale (with a chance to get a first peak at the offerings) or work on the day of the book sale, please contact FEAL at friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Notice: Temporary closure of McPherson Ave. |
Please be advised that McPherson Avenue, SE between Flat Shoals Avenue and Moreland Avenue will be temporarily closed to allow for construction activity associated with the East Atlanta Village Streetscape Improvement Project.
The City of Atlanta Department of Public Works will be upgrading the traffic signals, removing the traffic median, realigning the curb and sidewalk, replacing the existing concrete sidewalk, installing brick pavers, and a round-a-bout on McPherson Avenue between Moreland Avenue and Flat Shoals Avenue. Due to the use of heavy construction equipment, it is necessary to close the roadway for safety purposes. The road closure is scheduled to end in early November.
For more information about this project, including a detailed detour plan, visit http://www.atlantaga.gov/index.aspx?page=732&recordid=2026.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Summer is in full swing and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters! Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.
Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example: One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.
Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol
|

EASP News as of July 18, 2013
For the week of July 14-20, we're seeing our normal crime volume. East Atlanta had a couple bad weeks of crime, but we have been seeing fewer issues this week. So far, there has been one commercial burglary (this was from a shed on McWilliams, so it may be classified wrong), one larceny of $20 worth of fuel from the Chevron on Flat Shoals, and a pedestrian robbery at 600 Gresham on Wednesday morning about 2 a.m. There was another incident on Gresham on Sunday night, but for some reason it isn't appearing on the APD report. Supposedly there was no gun, but it should qualify as a pedestrian robbery as much as this one, even if there was no weapon. We're checking to see why this has not been included.
There was some improvement in the volume of burglaries for the week ending July 13th, but overall crime was high, and we need to continue to be on high alert. Preliminary numbers showed one pedestrian robbery on Glenwood near Blake, one aggravated assault, two burglaries, five vehicle larcenies, three other larcenies and one auto theft. The aggravated assault was a domestic issue at the Shoals Crossing apartment complex. The burglaries were several electronics from the 1800 block of Montvallo, and a drill and air compressor from the 1700 block of Braeburn. The auto theft was an unsuccessful attempt to steal a Jeep Liberty from the 1200 block of McPherson. Larcenies included a 16 speed mountain bike from the 1600 block of Glenwood where a screened porch was cut open, a temporary tag from a vehicle in the 1900 block of Flat Shoals, and a group of men that stole items from Buddy's and fled in a blue van. Two vehicle larcenies were in the Village area, one on McWilliams and one in the 1500 block of Newton. The final vehicle larceny was really an arrest of 17 year-old Calvin Wright, as the officer found him pulling on the door handle of a vehicle in the 1500 block of Glenwood.
We have the final totals of crime in East Atlanta for June. In spite of what the media and some in our community are saying, burglaries and armed robberies are not up, but less violent crimes are up in the past month. That does not mean that there haven't been more violent crimes and burglaries galore in surrounding communities, but June has not been bad for East Atlanta. Someone who lives a block outside of Beat 612 may argue that point, and everyone agrees that unincorporated Dekalb County has been poorly protected. We hope some area residents will join with us in putting together a Security Patrol (We believe two separate patrols are needed) for the unincorporated portions of Dekalb County that surround East Atlanta.
The EASP is in need of help via donations to assist in the East Atlanta Village Patrol, particularly in light of the significant incidents that have occurred in East Atlanta in the last month. To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster (404-954-1568). |
