Greetings! |
The East Atlanta Community Association is in the process of re-branding, and we need your help to come up with a tagline that fits our organization and our community! Please give us your ideas by posting comments here. We're looking for something concise, relatively serious (or humorous), and that will support our brand. |
B*ATL Returns to East Atlanta |
July 22nd will mark the 149th Anniversary of the historic Civil War Battle of Atlanta. To commemorate the important event, the neighborhoods in Atlanta's 5th Council District have teamed up to organize B*ATL in the weekend of July 19th-21st. The battlefield is actually in these neighborhoods where people live and work and play today. This will not only be an event of remembrance but also one with fun for everyone including: a Gala Dinner, a 5K run, Van and Walking Tours, a re-creation of the Frontlines with Re-enactment Soldiers and artillery, a Civil War to Civil Rights Tent with civilian re-enactors, story telling at the East Atlanta Library, historic music concerts and dramatic performances, shopping and dining in East Atlanta and Kirkwood and more!!
Please see the schedule of events.
Last call for tickets to the BATL Gala. Only 4 tickets left to the EACA tables. This year there will be a dancing to classic rhythm and blues and maybe some soul. If interested please email Henry Bryant.

Donate books to Friends of East Atlanta Library annual book sale |
Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) is looking for a lot of gently read books for its big annual fundraising book sale during the EAV Strut on September 21st. The group is accepting book donations now at the East Atlanta Library as long as they are free of mold and in fair condition. Money raised at the FEAL book sale primarily helps fund children's programming and the widely circulated book collections. Library budget cuts over the past few years have eliminated funding for children's programming and with East Atlanta's growing number of younger families with children, maintaining the library's great programs and activities has become one of FEAL's top priorities.
You may bring your books to the circulation desk at the library anytime during regular library hours. If you are interested in supporting the library by becoming a member of FEAL, pick up a brochure and membership form at the circulation desk. If you would like to volunteer to help sort books before the sale (with a chance to get a first peak at the offerings) or work on the day of the book sale, please contact FEAL at friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Second- and third-place parks will win $50,000 and $25,000 grants, respectively. Another $15,000 grant will be awarded, at random, to a lucky park that comes in 4th to 25th on the leader board.

Friday Food for Firefighters |
Summer is nearly here and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters! Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.
Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example: One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.
Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol |

EASP News as of July 9, 2013
The EASP continues to staff Village patrols several evenings per week. We have had multiple meetings with business owners about how to make the patrols more permanent. We have also spoken with Major Meadows, who is in favor of a dedicated, permanent APD patrol in the East Atlanta Village and surrounding area. APD, the EASP, business owners and community leaders are all behind a permanent patrol for the Village, not periodic shows of force each time a violent crime occurs. We'll continue to provide updates until there is more finality around the final solution.
On the morning of July 7th, 2013 at 0203hrs Unit 1612 responded to a pedestrian robbery at Glenwood Ave @ Blake Ave. The victim was walking home Eastbound on Glenwood Ave from a bar called Mary's when he was approached by three Black males. One male was armed with an AK-47 style weapon, another had a semi-automatic handgun. The males were described as being in their early twenties. They demanded the victim empty his pockets and took his cellular phone. The males ordered him to continue walking Eastbound on Glenwood and not to turn around. The victim never saw a suspect vehicle nor could he advise a direction of travel for the suspects.
On the morning of Saturday, June 8th around 1:00 a.m., the following robbery was reported: The victim stated he was robbed at 484 Monument Ave SE. He stated he was walking home from the Midway Bar which is located on Flat Shoals Ave SE. He was approached by suspect one, a black male wearing a blue polo shirt, who was possibly armed with a handgun. He was also approached by suspect two, a black male with a white t-shirt and dreads, who was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. The victim's wallet and phone were taken. Suspects fled the scene in a Dodge Caravan (GA tag PQN9983); which came back stolen out of Dekalb county.
The EASP is in need of help via donations to assist in the East Atlanta Village Patrol, particularly in light of the significant incidents that have occurred in East Atlanta in the last month. To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster (404-954-1568). |
