LGBT Family Activist and Author to Speak at The Friends School of Atlanta

Join Charis Books, Atlanta Pride, and The Friends School of Atlanta as they gather to present a very special event with author and LGBT family activist Zach Wahls.

It has been almost two years since Zach Wahls (then 19 years old) bravely stood up in front of the Iowa House of Representative and defended gay marriage and his family. Wahls proudly proclaimed, "The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character," and his speech instantly went viral and became YouTube's #1 political video of 2011.

In My Two Moms, Zach offers a stirring and brave defense of his family. Raised by two moms in a conservative Midwestern town, Zach's parents instilled in him values that families everywhere can embrace-values driven home by his journey toward becoming an Eagle Scout. Zach's upbringing couldn't have been more mainstream-he played sports, was active in Boy Scouts, and led his high school speech and debate team-yet, growing up with two moms, he knows that it's like to feel different and fear being bullied, or worse. My Two Moms also delivers a reassuring message to same-sex couples, their kids, and anyone who's ever felt like an outsider: "You are not alone."

This all-ages event is co-sponsored by Charis Circle's From Margin to Center Literary Program. The suggested donation is $5, but no one will be turned away. Atlanta Pride (www.atlantapride.org) and The Friends School of Atlanta are program partners. Books and signing provided by Charis Books and More.

This event will take place in The Friends School of Atlanta located at 862 Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030. Parking at the school and adjacent lots is free. The space is wheel chair accessible.

For other questions/concerns, please contact elizabeth@chariscircle.org.

EAV911 Emergency Twitter Group
What it is: A text-message based urgent message system. You the user can both receive text messages and send alerts to other users via text message quickly end easily.

What you need: A mobile device with text messaging, a free Twitter account and about a sixth-grade education to get set up.

How to get hooked up:
1) Get a Twitter account if you don't already have one.
   a) Sign up at www.twitter.com
   b) Set up your mobile device to receive Twitter updates at twitter.com/devices. Make sure you have set up your device to receive text messages. You will know you have by going back to the devices page when "Device updates" is ON for your device.
2) Request to link to EAV911 by going to your Twitter homepage and sending this message from the "What are you doing" form - "follow eav911". When you send this message, you should see this confirmation - "Okay! If EAV911 accepts your request, you'll start getting EAV911's updates."
3) I will have to approve the follow request. You will know I have done so when you see the list of previous eav911 messages on your Twitter homepage.
4) Go to the Twitter "following" page, find eav911 and make sure "device updates" is set to ON.

How to use EAV911:

Messages from other EAV911 users will now automatically come to your device.

  • To send a message to the group, send a text to Twitter's short code - 40404
  • Messages for EAV911 should follow this format: "@eav911 [text of your message]". Twitter will redistribute the message to everybody in the group

What to use EAV911 for:

The concept for this system is that messages sent this way should be "urgent and actionable". What that means is only information that is time-sensitive and that people can do something with should come across the system.

  • Somebody just got mugged in the Village - good message so other people can be aware.
  • Tornado coming through the Village - very good candidate.
  • Pretty high certainty that a certain car you can describe is roaming the neighborhood breaking into houses today - also a good candidate.
  • Your neighbor came home and discovered somebody stole his flat-panel TV earlier today - not a good candidate.
  • Feedback needed for Atlanta metro transportation project

The Civic League for Regional Atlanta has been asked by the Atlanta Regional Commission to help engage a diverse cross-section of metro residents in revisiting the region's transportation needs and wants.  Help give important feedback on how the Civic League should best engage the community by taking this brief survey.  Your responses will help determine how the Civic Leagues involves community members in the planning process going forward.

    Friday Food for Firefighters

Summer is nearly here and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!  Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed.  Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example:  One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

    East Atlanta Security Patrol

    EASP01

EASP News as of June 14, 2013

The week ending June 15th was uneventful on the crime front.  There was one larceny from a vehicle, two larcenies and two auto thefts.  The vehicle larceny was from a parking lot in the Village, and items taken included a bookbag, computer bag, Apple MacBook and Kindle Fire.  The larcenies included tiki torches from the 1600 block of Flat Shoals Road and a laptop that disappeared during a party in the 400 block of Blake.  One auto theft was from a gas station on Eastland where the victim left their keys unattended in the ignition.  The other was an unsuccessful attempt from the apartments at 1930 Flat Shoals Road.

For the week ending June 8th, there was a pedestrian robbery on Monument, three larcenies from vehicles, two larcenies and two vehicle thefts.  One of the larcenies was an A/C unit in the 1400 block of Newton.  The vehicle thefts were from the 1400 block of McPherson and a dirt bike from the Chevron at 1981 Flat Shoals Road.

We have listed the three vehicle larcenies below just to give an indication of what people leave in their cars:

1200 block of Portland - black 9MM gun case, black 9MM magazine, black&silver 9MM Ruger handgun
600 block of Clifton - laptop, GPS, backpack, carseat
500 block of Flat Shoals - 10- oxycodone pills, Rossi .38 special revolver, 20 assorted boxes of 38 special & .380 aut ammo

Since we've provided stats for East Atlanta, let's compare our crime to all of Zone 6.  These stats are comparing year to date totals.  Please note that Zone 6 burglaries are up over 70%, armed robberies are up over 50%, and car thefts are up over 30%.  We are not seeing similar increases in East Atlanta; Zone 6 would look even worse if East Atlanta were excluded.

    Aggravated Assaults - 96 incidents in 2013, 118 incidents in 2012
    Auto Thefts - 422 incidents in 2013, 320 incidents in 2012
    Burglaries - 417 incidents in 2013, 242 incidents in 2012
    Larcenies (auto) - 736 incidents in 2013, 767 incidents in 2012
    Larcenies - 508 incidents in 2013, 544 incidents in 2012
    Robberies - 173 incidents in 2013, 114 incidents in 2012

In comparing the crime stats in East Atlanta's Beat 612 for the first five months of 2013 relative to the same period in 2012, total crime is just about unchanged.  Here are the exact breakdowns:

    Aggravated Assaults - 6 incidents in 2013, 9 incidents in 2012
    Auto Thefts - 27 incidents in 2013, 30 incidents in 2012
    Residential Burglaries - 28 incidents in 2013, 24 incidents in 2012
    Commercial Burglaries - 5 incidents in 2013, 1 incident in 2012
    Larcenies (Auto) - 57 incidents in 2013, 55 incidents in 2012
    Larcenies - 15 incidents in 2013, 24 incidents in 2012
    Pedestrian Robberies - 9 incidents in 2013, 7 incidents in 2012
    Residential Robberies - 1 incidents in 2013, 2 incidents in 2012
    Commercial Robberies - 0 incidents in 2013, 0 incidents in 2012
