The Highlander School opening soon in EAV!

The Highlander School will be opening soon in the East Atlanta Village! We are a nature centered learning community that fosters collaboration and a celebration of childhood! The Highlander School will provide progressive early care and education for young children, infants to five. We are located right behind the East Atlanta Library at 1212 McPherson Ave, Atlanta, Ga. 30316, in a facility that has operated as a daycare center since 1974. Over the next couple of months, we will be transforming the building into a beautiful and inspiring space for young children and our community. So please look out for us! For information on enrollment, or to learn more about our program and philosophy please visit our website, thehighlanderschool.com or Facebook page,

Friends School of Atlanta Open House
Checklist Image

The Friends School of Atlanta (FSA) offers three great ways to learn more about Quaker education and its Pre-K through 8th grade offerings.

You are invited to attend an Open House on the FSA campus at 862 Columbia Drive in Decatur on Saturday, February 2, 2013, from 10:00 am to noon.  This event is designed to inform families considering application to FSA for the 2013-2014 school year.

FSA also regularly conducts two-hour school tours during school hours, where you will get an overview of Quaker education and have an in-depth discussion of the academic program and life of the school community. You will also have an opportunity to meet with students, tour the school and observe in classrooms. Separate tours are offered for Pre-K - 4th grade and 5th - 8th grade families. To learn about tour dates and make a reservation, please visit the home page of FSA's website: www.friendsschoolatlanta.org

East Atlanta Tree Planting

EACA is thrilled to announce that Trees Atlanta and the NeighborWoods program selected East Atlanta as the recipient of a FREE TREE program.

WANT A FREE TREE?

Join the fun!  Trees Atlanta and East Atlanta neighbors are planting trees!

Trees are available for your front yard at no cost to you!  Thanks to a generous grant from the City of Atlanta we can plant trees within 15 feet of the right-of-way.

Join us on January 26, 2013 from 9 am to 12 pm.

Meet at Burgess Peterson Academy at 9 am.  All ages are welcome, so feel free to bring the whole family. Volunteers will be planting trees in the landscape strip between the sidewalk and the curb and in front of your homes.  We will be watering the trees in the spring and summer, but feel free to give them extra water as well. Tips for watering are printed on the back.

What are the benefits?

The trees will provide shade, slow traffic, reduce crime and add beauty to the neighborhood.

Friends of East Atlanta Library need your help!

On Saturday, January 26th the Friends are looking for a little muscle. A few volunteers will assemble at the library at 10 am to dig up the bike rack sculpture near the rear parking lot at the library. It will require some shovel work and maybe some sledge hammer work to dig up and break up the small concrete foundation.  The sculpture, designed as part of a community art project competition held by EACA 12 years ago, is listing due to a recent accident.  Once it's removed, the sculpture will then be repainted and re-installed on February 9th.

If you are interested and available, please call Henry Bryant (404-377-6148).
Brownwood Park Water Fountains close for the season
Checklist Image

The water fountains at Brownwood Park will be shut down from December 1, 2012 to March 1 2013. Turning off the water is a precaution taken to prevent water fountain pipes from breaking if we have a hard freeze. If you have questions please contact parks@eaca.net.

Friday Food for Firefighters
Checklist Image

Winter is upon us and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!

Providing a meal means having a meal, already cooked, to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The Firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the Fire Station and they can heat something as needed.  Delivery of meals is usually between 5-5:30PM.

Sign up here (pw: friday) to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends. For example:  One or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or if you have questions.
