More Firms in Maryland Plan to Hire than in Any Other State, While More Firms in Michigan Plan Layoffs, Firms Remain Reluctant to Purchase New Equipment, Worry About Rising Materials, Health Care Costs Significantly more construction firms are planning to add new staff than plan to cut staff while demand for many types of private sector construction projects should increase this year according to survey results released today by the Associated General Contractors of America and Computer Guidance Corporation. The survey, conducted as part of Tentative Signs of a Recovery: The 2013 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook, provides a generally optimistic outlook for the year even as firms worry about rising costs and declining public sector demand for construction. Ceiling Work Is Often More Dangerous for Those on the Floor Below.
When looking to make your workplace safer for your employees, the logical place to start is with the main types of injuries that do occur: caught in, struck by, falls, electrocution and release of energy. All of these injury types can, often times, also be classified as a "Line of Fire" injury. Line of Fire refers to those situations when employees put themselves in harm's way during the course of their workday. Line of Fire hazards are one of the deadliest hazards found at the workplace, second only to slips, trips and falls; 27 percent of workplace deaths are related to Line of Fire accidents.

| OSHA: Sandy Contamination Below Permissible Limits | | |
NEWARK, N.J. - The levels of harmful contaminants at Superstorm Sandy cleanup sites in New York and New Jersey have so far not exceeded federal workplace exposure limits, officials said Wednesday.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration tested dozens of cleanup sites, measuring worker exposure to toxic substances. The agency fanned out to workplaces and debris sites ranging from beaches to landfills, testing for airborne contaminants and taking samples from debris and storm water.
Some sites showed the presence of contaminants including asbestos, carbon monoxide, lead and silica. Others had increased levels of noise. None, however, were above OSHA's permissible exposure limits
