Upcoming CE Dinner Meetings on Rabies Law in TN
In November, CE/dinner meetings will be offered across the state on the Rabies Law in TN. The focus will be on how the rabies law is enforced and about the specific roles and responsibilities of veterinarians in the event of an animal bite case or if a vaccination question arises. The program will be presented by Heather Henderson, DVM, MPH, Epidemiologist, Tennessee Department of Health. Co-presenter will be Lauren Olavessen, DVM, with Merial. We thank Merial for their sponsorship of the programs. Watch for registration information for the programs to be held in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville.
Refunds Available for Penalties Paid on Professional Privilege Tax
The TVMA received notice from Barbara Sampson, Assistant Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Revenue, that the Department will be issuing refunds for penalties paid by veterinarians who have been in good standing with the Department for the past two years. In order to receive your refund, it will be necessary for you to send a letter or email directly to Ms. Sampson. Read more...

Join us at the AVMA Economic Summit October 28, Chicago
This year's Summit will focus on the vertically-related markets within the profession, specifically the market for veterinary education, the market for veterinarians, and the market for veterinary services. Attendees will also explore veterinary economics overall and the value and need to collect and analyze veterinary economics data in a collaborative but systematic way. Data reviewed during the Summit will include: employment/unemployment of veterinarians, supply/demand for veterinarians, and price/income elasticity for veterinary services.

Tennessee New Hire Reporting Program
Effective October 1, 1997, state and federal law (Tennessee law, §36-5-1102 through §36-5-1105, and the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, 42 U.S.C. 653a) require all employers to report new and re-hired employees to the Tennessee New Hire Reporting Program within 20 days of the date of hire. Former UTVCM Dean Mike Shires Passes Away The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is saddened to share that Dr. Mike Shires passed away this week in South Africa. He was in the final stages of lymphoma and was under hospice care at home in South Africa with his wife and daughter. He helps clinic owners attain a higher quality work-life as well as better financial results. He has a wide variety of professional experience and awards, having owned, started, and managed several successful businesses in the Nashville, TN area.
Lynn believes that successful practice leaders are able to create a business culture that promotes and recognizes the energy, intellect, and creativity of its human resources. He believes that most business decisions ought to be made at the point of service delivery by the very people doing the work. Therefore, he assists business and practice owners in the difficult task of cultural development. He offers many tools and techniques that favorably affect operational efficiency and promote accurate and timely data collection and decision-making. For small businesses, such as veterinary clinics, he defines success as maximizing profits while enhancing the lifestyle of the owners and staff.
He was born and raised in Music City, USA. He is married and a dedicated father and the proud papa to four granddaughters. His community service and charitable efforts have mainly centered on substance abuse and family assistance programs by serving as an officer and on the board of the Alcohol and Drug Council of Middle Tennessee for 12 years. His hobbies include motorcycling, woodworking, creative writing, and photography.
