Upcoming CE Dinner Meetings on Rabies Law in TN

In November, CE/dinner meetings will be offered across the state on the Rabies Law in TN.  The focus will be on how the rabies law is enforced and about the specific roles and responsibilities of veterinarians in the event of an animal bite case or if a vaccination question arises.  The program will be presented by Heather Henderson, DVM, MPH, Epidemiologist, Tennessee Department of Health.  Co-presenter will be Lauren Olavessen, DVM, with Merial.  We thank Merial for their sponsorship of the programs.  Watch for registration information for the programs to be held in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville.

Senators Introduce New Bill that Places Sweeping Prescription Mandate on Veterinarians 
At the AVMA, we are displeased to see Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduce a bill under the guise of saving consumers money on their pets' medications. The senators introduced a bill, called the Fairness to Pet Owners Act, in a press conference on Sunday, telling consumers that they will soon be able to have a choice on where they purchase their pets' medications, making a trip to the vet seem more like "a walk in the park," said Schumer. Tennessee Department of Revenue to Hold Free Tax Workshops for New Businesses in September

The Tennessee Department of Revenue announces its next series of free bimonthly tax workshops to be held in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville in September.  These free workshops are designed to assist those encountering business-related taxes for the first time. Tax specialists from various local and state agencies will provide the basic information needed to comply with registration and tax requirements. During the session, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to these tax specialists, ask questions and receive materials explaining tax responsibilities. Areas of discussion will include business tax, sales and use tax, unemployment tax and tax enforcement procedures. 

 

USDA Establishes New Health Requirements for Dogs Imported to the U.S. for Resale

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has amended Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations to require that dogs imported to the U.S. meet stronger health and safety standards to protect Americans and Americans' pets. The new rule ensures that dogs imported for resale are vaccinated and in good health, and required to be over six months of age.  Read more...

The white coat ceremony is designed to impress upon the students the qualities that accompany the profession of veterinary medicine: excellence, honor, integrity, compassion, respect and a sense of duty to others.  Dr. Frankie Locklar, TVMA President, participated in the ceremony by welcoming the students.  The white coats were provided by TVMA.

Jodi Daniels

Our spotlight for September falls on Jodi Daniels, sales representative for Elanco Animal Health in the middle Tennessee area.  Prior to joining Elanco three years ago, Jodi was with Merck Animal Health (Intervet Schering Plough) for five years.  Originally from Oregon, she has lived in middle Tennessee since 1995 and graduated from MTSU in 1999.  Currently she lives in Nashville.  Her family and friends can usually find her at the barn, on her yoga mat, dining out at local eateries around Nashville, riding her road bike, or just spending time outdoors.

Mars Petcare US Announces Voluntary Recall 

Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of 22 bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products due to the possible presence of a foreign material. The bags were produced in one manufacturing facility, and shipped to one retail customer. The facility production line has been shut down until this issue is resolved.  Affected bags, which were sold between August 18 and August 25 in 12 Dollar General stores* in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, may contain small metal fragments, which could have entered the packages during the production process.  Read more...

 

 

Obituary

 

Carlos Webb, DVM, age 76, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014, at Broward Health North Hospital, Deerfield Beach, Florida, from complications of a stroke with his wife at his side. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, and papaw.  He received bachelor of science and master of science degrees in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate of veterinary medicine (DVM) from Auburn University.  Before retiring in 2010, Dr. Webb practiced for 43 years in Knoxville where he owned and operated two practices, Alcoaway Veterinary Hospital and Rocky Hill Animal Hospital.  He served on the Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiners, was a member of the TVMA, served two terms as president of East Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, past president of the Knoxville Veterinary Medical Association, and was co-founder and president of the Knoxville Pet Emergency Clinic.    

Dr. Webb is preceded in death by his two sons, Christopher Shane Webb and Jonathan Erik Webb; father and mother, George and Audrey Webb; brothers, George, Jr., Mayford and half brother, J. W. Webb.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Waldrop Webb; grandchildren, Mackenzie Elizabeth Webb, Jackson Erik Webb, and Macartney Addison Webb; sisters, Joyce (Gene) Terry of Phoenix, Alabama, and Patsy Wilhite of Maryville; sister-in-law, Barbara Webb of Athens; brother-in-law, Lamar (Candy) Waldrop of Lenoir City; sisters-in-law, Carol Waldrop (Dave) Hill of Cleveland,
Tennessee, and Barbara Waldrop (Avery) Petty of Lenoir City; several nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and many special cousins and friends, including his dog, Teddy.  

Come to the celebration of Dr. Webb's life on September 13 at 3:00 p.m. at Sevier Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Hollie Miller officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service. Casual attire is requested.  As an advocate of organ donation, he donated his organs for Scientific Research, Deerfield Beach, Florida.  Honoring Dr. Webb's request, the burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Sevier Heights Baptist Church, 3232 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920 or the American Cancer Society, the Ronald McDonald House, or a favorite charity.  For more information, click here
