New Prescription Bill Introduced

In a press conference on July 20, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced a bill, called the Fairness to Pet Owners Act, telling consumers that they will soon be able to have a choice on where they purchase their pets' medications, making a trip to the vet seem more like "a walk in the park," said Schumer. Unfortunately, this is not the whole story.  Consumers have had and continue to have a choice on where they fill their pets' prescriptions. As part of their ethical obligation, veterinarians should already be honoring a client's request for a written prescription when asked, and many state laws and regulations require it. In some instances, veterinary medications are only available through a veterinarian, negating the need for a written prescription.  The senators believe that veterinarians oppose this legislation because of a need to protect a revenue-generating business.  Read more...

Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act Becomes Law

President Obama has signed into law the long-awaited Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act (H.R. 1528), making it legal for veterinarians to provide complete medical care to their animal patients beyond their clinics and across state lines.

New Hire Reporting Requirements

The State of Tennessee has requested that we provide the following information regarding the requirement of reporting new hires and re-hires within 20 days of the date of hire or return to work.  As an employer, the information you provide about your new employees helps Tennessee's child support program facilitate the collection of child support. New hire reporting also helps the state of Tennessee stop unemployment insurance, workers compensation, and public assistance fraud.

Tramadol to Become Schedule IV Controlled Substance

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) published its decision to schedule tramadol as a Schedule IV controlled substance. The rule becomes effective August 18 of this year. The DEA's action was fairly swift, having published its proposal to schedule tramadol just eight months ago. Upon conducting its eight-step analysis, the DEA found that relative to Schedule III drugs, tramadol has a low potential for abuse and limited physical dependence, and coupled with tramadol's medical legitimacy, DEA determined Schedule IV to be the most fitting for tramadol.  Read more...

Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy for Horses

The inner workings of regenerative medicine sound like something from a science fiction movie, a science that replaces or regenerates human or animal cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function following impairment.  At the UT Veterinary Medical Center, the Regenerative Medicine Service uses this science to treat various equine diseases.  Read more...

LMU-CVM'S Faulkner Publishes Feature Article In Journal

Dr. Charles Faulkner, assistant professor of veterinary medicine at Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) is the author of the feature article in the current issue of "The Journal of Parasitology," Vol. 100, No. 3, 2014.
The article, entitled "A Retrospective Examination of Paleoparasitology and Its Establishment in the Journal of Parasitology," reviews the history of research in study of parasites preserved in archaeological and paleontological specimens.  Until 2009, paleoparasitology had never received recognition for being its own discipline among the sciences, and had always been considered "adjunct" to the study of prehistoric human populations. This all changed when "The Journal of Parasitology" designated a portion of the journal to the publication of research in paleoparasitology and formally recognized it as a disciplinary interest on the cover of the 2009 volume.

Michelle Conkle
MWI Veterinary Supply

I fell in love with animals at an early age on our family farm in Paris, TN. I am a 1994 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, where I studied Animal Science and Psychology, followed by the recent completion of a Master of Arts degree from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2012.

I began my work in the Veterinary Pharmaceutical Industry in 1998 as an Equine Sales Representative with Fort Dodge Animal Health. I moved from manufacturing over to distribution in 2004 and have enjoyed being an Outside Sales Rep for Idaho-based MWI Veterinary Supply for the past 10 years in the Middle Tennessee area. Inside Sales Rep, Carla Stearn, and I enjoy working to help our accounts run their practices more efficiently with the resources offered by MWI (initials of our founding veterinarian, Millard Wallace Ickes).

I have found that the people in the veterinary industry are genuine and dedicated. I learn from the veterinarians and manufacturer reps I work with on a daily basis. I often hear comments from reps who come from out of state to work with me that we have the nicest people and the best practices they have ever visited. I couldn't agree more!

I live in College Grove, TN with my husband of 13 years, Mike, and our darling daughter, Alli, age 8. We have 3 horses and an energetic Blue Heeler! We enjoy trail riding, canoeing, fishing & hunting. Any spare time I find is spent riding horses & gardening on our small farm.
