AVMA House of Delegates to Consider Governance Changes at Annual Meeting

During its annual meeting on July 24-25 in Denver, Colorado, the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) will consider several proposals that potentially will reform how the policy-making body will be elected and govern in the future. The Executive Board has approved and submitted these recommendations, which are the product of two years of intensive study and feedback-gathering by two entities, the Governance Engagement Team and Task Force on Governance and Member Participation.  The proposed bylaws amendments would provide AVMA members the opportunity to elect about one half of the delegates while the rest of the delegates would still be designated by state and allied VMAs.  Read more...

Congress is Working to Reauthorize the Higher Education Act

Access to higher education, cost of education, student loan interest rates, loan limits, repayment terms, forbearance, deferment, accreditation, education quality, and reporting requirements. These are just some of the many issues that Congress is examining as they work to reauthorize the Higher Education Act (HEA).  The HEA, originally signed into law in 1965 as part of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society agenda of domestic programs, authorizes the major federal student aid programs that are responsible for the majority of financial assistance to postsecondary students. The HEA must be re-approved, or "reauthorized," by Congress, generally every five years. In addition to the major reauthorization bills, Congress also considers many bills that may directly or indirectly impact the HEA.  What will certainly be a focus for the HEA reauthorization this year are the roles that the U.S. Department of Education, accreditors and state licensing agencies have in postsecondary education.  Read more...

New House Bill Will Protect Safety of Horses Traveling on Highways

U.S. Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) recently introduced legislation that places a federal ban on the use of double-decker trailers for the transport of horses.  The Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2014 (H.R. 4440) is the companion bill to S. 1459, introduced in the Senate last year by Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and will ensure horses have the proper headroom they need to safely and humanely travel along America's highways.  Read more...
