Join Your Colleagues from Across the State for Veterinary Day on the Hill
Wednesday, February 5, 2014
8:00 am - 1:00 pm Legislative Plaza, Nashville
TVMA is hosting its 3rd Annual "Veterinary Day on the Hill" which will be held at Legislative Plaza in Nashville. The purpose of the event is to educate legislators and their staffs about the veterinary profession and about how important veterinary medicine is in the protection of public health. We need as many veterinarians as possible to be there. In the past few years, advocacy has become one of the most, if not the most, important services you receive as a TVMA member. More legislation is being introduced each year which affects the veterinary profession and animal health. We're urging you to be a part of this event to let the legislators know that you are concerned about your profession, animals, and the public. Other health-related professionals have events such as ours and regularly have 100-300 of their members in attendance. Let's show the legislators that we are equally committed.
Reception for New TVMA Members
The TVMA Executive Board cordially invites all members who have joined TVMA since October 1, 2012, including active, academia, paraprofessionals, and allied members, to a reception on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Embassy Suites Hotel Nashville SE/Murfreesboro. It will be an opportunity to meet and visit with the TVMA Executive Board as well as a time for networking with your colleagues. If you are registering for the MCVC, please indicate on the registration form if you plan to attend. If you are not attending the MCVC, you may RSVP by contacting the TVMA office at 931-438-0070 or green.delo@gmail.com.

In our own lives each of us has had the privilege of coming in contact with someone who has made a lasting impression because of their dedication and commitment to the science of veterinary medicine. Why not honor that individual by nominating them for one of these special tributes? The American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation encourage you to nominate someone you feel has demonstrated exemplary care for the health and welfare of animals. The deadline to place your nomination is Saturday, February 1. For additional information and to submit your nomination please visit the AVMA's website. |

Cattle Veterinarians Develop Guide on Drug Oversight
A guide from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners is intended to help veterinarians ensure they establish proper oversight for drug use in cattle. The AABP published in November 2013 the two-page guide on veterinarian-client-patient relationship practices that the organization endorses and that exceed regulatory requirements. For example, the guide indicates veterinarians or veterinary practices should have written agreements that identify the veterinarian who is accountable for drug administration on a farm as well as who is responsible for duties such as drug inventory maintenance. AVMA Salutes U.S. Senate for Unanimously Passing Veterinary Medicine Mobility Bill
In a move that brings Congress one step closer to allowing veterinarians the complete ability to provide care to their animal patients beyond their clinics, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) praised the U.S. Senate today for its passage of the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act (S. 1171). Sponsored by Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) and Angus King (I-Maine), this commonsense legislation will give veterinarians who treat their patients on the farm, in the wild, at a client's home or in any other mobile setting, the ability to bring and use controlled substances to provide pain management, anesthesia or euthanasia. VMLRP FR Notice
The FR notice to solicit veterinary shortage nominations from State Animal Health Officials (SAHOs) for the 2014 VMLRP program cycle was published in the Federal Register today. For a PDF version of the notice, click here.
SAHOs will have 60 days to submit their nominations by email attachment (deadline, March 10, 2014) on the form (same as last year) provided. Maximum number of nominations for each state remains the same as prior years (see website for your State's maximum number of nomination.) As in the past, carry-over nominations, which require no further merit review for inclusion on the 2014 veterinary shortage map, must be copied and pasted without change of content from last year into a new shortage form to which the current year submission date will be applied as well as any changes in the name of the SAHO making the submission. As in the past, new shortage nominations submitted by SAHOs will undergo merit review and be officially designated and posted to the map if approved by the external panel of experts convened by NIFA in March. We anticipate 2014 shortage maps will be posted in April. SAHOs are asked to indicate which are carry-over and which are new shortage nominations in the body of the submission email.
In determining 2014 shortage priorities, SAHOs are encouraged to review the historical shortage maps available for viewing under the SAHO daughter page at www.nifa.usda.gov/vmlrp to determine whether areas previously indicated as filled by prior awardees may no longer be filled, e.g., due either to expiration of the 3yr contract period (this has just occurred for the 2010 awardee cohort, except for the few who won renewal), or to early termination of the award. The latter has occurred in a small number of cases, typically related to extenuating circumstances. Vacated shortage areas may therefore once again become candidate shortages situations depending on priorities established by each SAHO in his/her state for 2014-2016.
