Get Tongues Wagging

Better pet health begins with a conversation.  Seeing you at least once a year helps pets live longer, healthier lives, but some clients still think veterinary visits are just for vaccines and emergencies.  That's why TVMA has become a member of the Partners for Healthy Pets, a consumer awareness campaign led by AVMA and AAHA.  Your practice can become a part of the program, too.  It's free, easy to use and provides an online toolbox to help you have more successful conversations with your clients about the benefits of regular preventive healthcare visits.  Enrollees will receive a monthly newsletter containing colorful and compelling consumer campaign materials that you can use on your website, in your newsletter and blogs, and in your practice.  A pet owner website, www.healthypetcheckup.org, includes information on why their pets need annual checkups, what you are looking for during a checkup, questions they can ask you, and some fun facts.  Owners may also register to receive reminders about scheduling the pet's annual checkup plus they are able to access the AVMA and AAHA membership directories from the website.  Digital ads have begun to appear on CNN and Everyday HealthSheKnowsPet MDYahoo Finance and Facebook.  Print advertising have been placed in PeopleO (Oprah Magazine)Everyday with Rachel RayFamily Fun, and Prevention magazines. Advertising will continue through 2014.  Check out the webstie at www.partnersforhealthypets.org and register today!

Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act

Cows may not be jumping over the moon just yet, but they are standing up for an important piece of legislation - the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act (VMMA).  On Oct. 29, AVMA ran a full-page, color advertisement in the National Journal Daily that urges federal lawmakers to pass the VMMA. The bill would make it legal for veterinarians to carry and use controlled substances beyond their registered places of business - often their clinics or homes - to their animal patients. Prominently featuring a picture of a cow, the ad points out that veterinarians must be able to treat animals "from barnyards to the back woods to our own backyards," but until the Controlled Substances Act is amended, veterinarians are being told by the Drug Enforcement Administration that they are in violation of the law for bringing these vital medications outside of their clinics.  Read more...

The "Average" Veterinary College Applicant

From the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges

Ever wonder what the average applicant to vet school is like? AAVMC researchers have constructed a composite of the average applicant offered admission during the 2013 VMCAS cycle.  The average applicant was a 24-year old female from the suburbs who had earned a bachelor's degree and applied 1.2 times (if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.) She had an average GPA of 3.56 and had GRE scores of 155 (66th percentile), 154 (57th percentile) and 3.9 (54th percentile) on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical tests, respectively.  The average number of veterinary contact hours, which represents volunteer or paid service working in a veterinary medical setting, was 2,462.  Finally, she knew before she was ten years old that she wanted to study veterinary medicine when she grew up.  Bear in mind that these attributes define the average student offered admission, not necessarily all who matriculated.
