TVMA Awards Nominations Welcomed 

Each year, TVMA conducts an awards program to honor individuals whose service has contributed significantly to the profession of veterinary medicine in the State of Tennessee. The awards to be presented on March 1, 2014 during the Music City Veterinary Conference will be Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Service, Outstanding Practitioner of the Year, Outstanding Commercial Representative of the Year, and Excellence in Media. New Service for Students and Recent Graduates
As a benefit for student and recent graduate members, TVMA has added an e-newsletter which will be published in the Fall and Spring of each year. Topics will include practical information to help prepare them for the future in a veterinary practice.

Wildlife Rabies Vaccination Project Helps Protect People and Pets

New Dates Set for Distribution of Vaccine Packets

The Tennessee Department of Health is working with the United States Department of Agriculture again this fall to help prevent rabies by distributing oral rabies vaccine for wild raccoons along Tennessee's borders with Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. After a delay due to the federal government shutdown, the annual baiting program administered by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services, is now underway. FDA Proposes Revision to Annual Report on Antimicrobials for Food-Producing Animals

In an effort to improve transparency about the amount of antimicrobials sold or distributed for use in food-producing animals, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is announcing a proposal to provide additional data tables in its annual summary report of this information. The proposal is available for public comment until November 25, 2013.  Read more...

2012 National Pet Obesity Survey Results

U.S. pet obesity rates continued to increase in 2012 with the number of overweight cats reaching an all-time high. The sixth annual National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) found 52.5 percent of dogs and 58.3 percent of cats to be overweight or obese by their veterinarian. That equals approximately 80 million U.S. dogs and cats at increased risk for weight-related disorders such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension and many cancers.  Read more...
