Employer Mandated Employee Notification Due Oct. 1.

The TVMA webinars "Healthcare Reform and how it affects small businesses" presented timely important information benefiting every member. In a continuing effort to keep TVMA members informed of requirements and developments the following is recommended reading.

With the recent employer mandate delay, some businesses might be overlooking the requirement to provide a notice to employees about health insurance coverage that may be available through a public exchange. Employers must provide a notice to each employee, regardless of plan enrollment status or part-time or full-time status, by Oct. 1. TVMA Creates Members-only Group on Facebook

TVMA has created a members-only group on Facebook in order for members to learn more about their fellow colleagues/members and to become more informed of TVMA events.  One of our goals is to create an information network where members can all bounce around ideas, cases (if you wish to do so), as well as new treatments and therapies that you may be using that have been successful. We look forward to many of you joining this page with the hopes of becoming more connected as members of TVMA.

DEA clarifies phenylpropanolamine tracking

Earlier this year, there were rumors in a few states that veterinarians were required to track or log their phenylpropanolamine (PPA) sales, just like pharmacists do for pseudoephedrine sales (per the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act). In response, the AVMA contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to learn that the rules that dictate a pharmacist's tracking of pseudoephedrine sales do not apply to veterinary sales of PPA. This is because PPA is a prescription drug, and the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act only applies to certain nonprescription drug products. Read more...

Deadline near for comments on guidelines for humane slaughter

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is requesting member comments on a draft version of the AVMA Guidelines for the Humane Slaughter of Animals, and reminds member veterinarians that the deadline on this comment period is September 30.

The Panel on Humane Slaughter developed the guidelines to help veterinarians minimize pain and distress in hooved animals, poultry, rabbits, and fish prior to and during slaughter. The document describes what conditions and actions the panel found to be appropriate, starting with the arrival of animals at a slaughter facility, and it includes details on regulations, oversight, training, facility design, animal movement, and slaughter techniques.

Species-specific information is included, as is guidance on religious and ritual slaughter.

"An AVMA panel has put together these draft guidelines on human slaughter, but this is just the first step in the approval process," explains Dr. Gail Golab, director of the AVMA Animal Welfare Division. "We need our members to come forward and offer their informed, professional, scientific and sensitive comments on these draft guidelines so we can incorporate their input and produce final guidelines that reflect the combined wisdom and expertise included in our association."
