Glenis Moore Recipient of TVMA Student Award

TVMA is proud to announce that Glenis Moore was chosen as TVMA's Student Award recipient for 2013.  Dr. Moore was born in Chagrin Falls, OH and has called Franklin her home since 1997.  Since the age of five, she has wanted to be a veterinarian.  She graduated with a BS in Animal Science from UT and received her DVM on May 11 from UTCVM.  She is currently working on finishing her Masters of Public Health this year.  She, her husband and their 2 cats will be moving to Nashville where she will likely work in a small animal practice.

Al Roker of Today Show Visits Dr. Charlie Hatcher's Farm
Dr. Charlie Hatcher, Tennessee State Veterinarian, and his family recently were winners in the "Wake Up with Al" contest on the Today Show.  Al Roker, weatherman for the Today Show, visited the 200 acre-six generation farm in College Grove. "I thought it would be great if we could visit and - in a sense - honor people who are integral to our society: farmers in America," Roker said. "Family farmers in this country are really under appreciated. They work hard, and they really get the job done for America."

Action Alert

Contact your members of Congress and urge them to support the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act of 2013 (H.R. 1528), which would amend the CSA that currently prohibits veterinarians from transporting controlled substances to treat their animal patients outside of their registered locations.  For more information, click here.

Regulatory News

Release of Veterinary Records

The Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners discussed the release of veterinary records and privacy issues during their last meeting.  The board will follow the rules as written which state that no information obtained in a professional capacity about the patient or client can be disclosed without written permission.  The board will accept a fax, an email, or a text as proof of written permission.

For more information, you may check Rule 1730-01-.13 Unprofessional Conduct.  The information is shown under (6) Revealing without written permission knowledge obtained in a professional capacity about animals or owners

It was suggested that a check-off box might be included on new client registration forms asking permission to share vaccination information with kennels or other veterinarians and/or a second check-off box indicating permission to share full medical information with another veterinarian.  Some other form of prior approval for information release could be obtained (maybe at the time of annual examination). It is up to the veterinarians to decide how best to comply with this rule.

The State Veterinarian's office

would like to remind you of some common mistakes made on CVI's that cause them to be disapproved:

  1. Please do not use P.O.Box addresses for the Consignor and the Consignee. We must have a numbered street address.
  2. Please put in the issue date.
  3. Please use your 6 digit national accreditation number on all accredited paperwork instead of your Tennessee  license number.
  4. The Animal Disease Traceability Rule that went into effect on March 11, 2013 requires Health Certificates to be in the State Veterinarian's Office of origin within 7 calendar days of issuance. In turn, the certificates have to be in the State Veterinarian's office of destination within 7 days of receipt by our office. Please make sure your certificates reach our office within the allotted timeframe to avoid being disapproved.

Morris Animal Foundation Needs Your Help. In 2012, the foundation launched the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, the largest research initiative ever conducted in veterinary medicine. The study is recruiting 3,000 Golden retrievers less than two years of age, along with their owners and veterinarians, into a lifelong observational study to evaluate the influence of diet, genetics and environment on the development of cancer and other diseases. They have enrolled approximately 500 of the 3,000 dogs needed for this study and many of the current participants have told them they first heard about the study from their veterinarian. Therefore, they are asking for your assistance in recruiting additional dogs for this study. Read more...
