Tell Congress to Support the VMLRP Enhancement Act

Congress recently introduced the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) Enhancement Act (S. 553/H.R. 1125). This bipartisan legislation addresses the critical need for veterinarians in rural areas of the country by making the VMLRP tax-exempt, thereby increasing the number of veterinarians who can participate in the program without requiring additional funds from Congress. AVMA Lauds U.S. Representatives on Bill to Amend the Controlled Substances Act

The American Veterinary Medical Association applauds U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) and Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) for introducing legislation April 12 that corrects a restriction in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), which prevents veterinarians from transporting or using controlled substances outside of their registered places of business. The bill, the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act of 2013 (H.R. 1528), will make it legal for veterinarians to transport and dispense medications used for pain management, anesthesia and euthanasia that they need to properly care for animal patients in various settings. Take action now.

Horse Slaughter Bill Is Revamped, Reintroduced

U.S. Congressman Pat Meehan (R-Pa.) and U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) introduced the Safeguard American Food Exports Act of 2013 (H.R. 1094, S. 541) on March 12. This legislation, known as the "SAFE Act," is a new take on the issue of horse slaughter. It would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit the sale, transport, import or export of equines, or their parts, to be slaughtered for human consumption. Read more...

Bipartisan Legislators Form Veterinary Medicine Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives

U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) and U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), both veterinarians, have joined forces to form the first-ever, bipartisan Veterinary Medicine Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the March 6 letter the congressmen sent to fellow representatives inviting them to join the caucus, they underscored the critical role the profession of veterinary medicine plays in a healthy society and stated that the caucus aims to "increase awareness of the importance of veterinary medicine on research, public health, animal health and welfare, food safety and our overall economy." AVMA endorses program to provide free dental exams to service dogs

Service animals - including guide dogs, service dogs, working dogs, military dogs, and search and rescue dogs - selflessly give so much to the people they serve and the public. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) is giving back to these incredibly talented animals by offering free dental exams to service animals for the entire month of June and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has wholeheartedly endorsed that contribution to some of our nation's hardest workers. Owners and handlers of service animals that have been certified by a formal training program or enrolled in a training program can register online from May 1 until June 15, 2013 at the AVDC website. Read more...

Doctor, Have You Checked Your Website's Pulse Lately?

For the most part, the Yellow Pages (as a source for finding a veterinarian) are on life support. Internet search engines are now responsible for the majority of searches for virtually all service providers. Even people who use the Yellow Pages often follow up by reviewing a practice's website before calling for an appointment. So, assuming you have a website, you probably feel this article is not for you. If so, you may be wrong.
