From the President....

Dear TVMA Membership and Colleagues:

As my presidency comes to an end and the transition to new leadership begins I wanted and am fortunate enough to be able to address the membership concerning an upcoming event sponsored by TVMA. First of all, thank you for a great year and for your continued membership and willingness to support the mission of your association. A profession is defined as "a calling that requires specialized knowledge and often a long and
intensive academic preparation.

A profession is a body of persons engaged in a calling. A few of the characteristics of a profession include the provision of essential services to individuals and society, the achievement of a high level of public trust and confidence, the achievement of continued accountability to society through the profession,a commitment to lifelong competency and the engagement in one or more professional organizations. A strong profession is characterized by a profession that is an advocate for the protection, development and advancement of all aspects and facets of veterinary medicine pertinent to the general health of the profession and society. The mission of TVMA is characterized by education, advocacy, being a resource and protecting animal and human health and welfare. The strength of our profession begins with a solid educational foundation that produces quality, entry level veterinarians that are equipped to serve the many vocations available in the veterinary profession. This education continues in lifelong learning through continuing education. A strong private sector comes from a strong academic sector and, conversely, a strong academic sector comes from partnerships with the private sector. The TVMA is an "advocate". It is the eyes and ears of the profession in Tennessee as well as a resource for unified action when needed. Lastly, TVMA is a resource, a treasure chest of intellectual assets, knowledge, experiences, connectivity and relationships available to veterinarians and the public. The profession is being challenged from many different fronts. To continue to increase our strength and influence as an association within our profession we must be unified, one voice, "a team".

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, between 8 am and 1 pm, on Legislative Plaza in Nashville there will be an opportunity for us to be unified and to work as a team to educate our legislators about veterinary medicine in Tennessee andthe value of the TVMA as a resource on animal issues, public health issues, and issues pertinent to the veterinary profession. If there is any way that you can participate between the allotted timeframe, I ask you to please be there. This is an opportunity to practice unity, put aside personal agendas, support the profession, and achieve one of the characteristics of being a professional, engagement in the activities of a professional association. If you cannot personally attend the Veterinary Day on the Hill but can send an associate I would encourage you to do so. Other ways that you can contribute to the missions of TVMA is through recruiting new members and/or supporting the Tennessee Veterinary Political Action Committee (TN-V-PAC) by a financial contribution.

I feel very privileged to have served as your president and I hope that I can continue to serve the TVMA and the profession as immediate past president and beyond.

Thank you,

Dr. Dennis Geiser
