Legislative News
Join Veterinarians from Across the State at Veterinary Day on the Hill
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 27, 2013. TVMA is hosting "Veterinary Day on the Hill" which will be held at Legislative Plaza in Nashville. The purpose of the event is to educate legislators and their staffs about the veterinary profession and about how important veterinary medicine is in the protection of public health. The Controlled Substance Database legislation is a perfect example of the importance of building relationships with our legislators. They were willing to listen to the veterinarians about how the bill affected them and their practices and made changes to lessen the requirements for the veterinarians such as the requirement on checking the database. This is only one example. We want to keep building the relationships with all legislators and it is important for all of us to be involved.
We need as many veterinarians as possible to be there. In the past few years, advocacy has become one of the most, if not the most, important services you receive as a TVMA member. More legislation is being introduced each year which affects the veterinary profession and animal health. We're urging you to be a part of this event to let the legislators know that you are concerned about your profession, animals, and the public. Other health-related professionals have events such as ours and regularly have 100-300 of their members in attendance. Let's show the legislators that we are equally committed.
Here's how it will work:
- Contact the TVMA office at green.delo@gmail.com or 931-438-0070 to let us know you will be attending.
- Tabletops will be set up in a common area at Legislative Plaza and we will hand out materials with information about veterinary medicine and the specialties within the profession.
- You and other veterinarians will have the opportunity to meet and talk with legislators and their staffs with the purpose of building relationships. TVMA staff will be setting up the appointments. If there is a legislator that you would like to visit, please notify TVMA staff in advance.
- A goody bag for the legislators will be delivered to the legislators' offices.
- The scheduled time is from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. If you are unable to attend the entire time, come for a couple of hours.
- We need veterinarians from all districts.
Wear your work apparel and bring your business cards.
We know all veterinarians cannot attend, but please plan for at least one veterinarian from your practice to be in attendance.
Those planning to attend, please send an email to Deloris at green.delo@gmail.com.
Let's show the legislators how serious we are about our profession and join us on February 27!
