TVMA Position Statement - TVMA distributed a proposed position statement regarding soring and other abusive practices to the membership for comment.  As a result of the comments received, revisions were made to the position statement.  The following statement has been adopted:

The Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association strongly condemns the abuse of all animals, and this condemnation certainly includes soring and other abusive practices towards all breeds of horses including the Tennessee Walking Horse. The TVMA firmly believes all equine industry practitioners and horse owners have a responsibility to provide humane care throughout the lives of all horses. The Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association supports and encourages further investigation into the use of action devices and performance packages in the training and showing of Tennessee Walking Horses as well as in all other breeds.

Legislative News

Legislation Introduced to Eliminate Industry Self-Regulation - Four congressional members introduced legislation Sept. 14 that would increase civil and criminal penalties for anyone found soring a horse-that is, abusing it to get a "big-lick" gait for competition-and would end the gaited horse industry's current self-policing program.  The Horse Protection Act Amendments of 2012 (H.R. 6388) also would end the use of soring devices such as chains and nontherapeutic pads and shoes-something the AVMA and American Association of Equine Practitioners have previously called for, among other reforms (see JAVMA, Aug. 1, 2012, page 296).  The proposed amendments to the 40-year-old HPA are sponsored by U.S. Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Jim Moran (D-Va.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), and Ed Whitfield (R-Ky).  Read more...

Controlled Substances Laws Could Change - Congress could consider legislation this year to counteract federal drug rules that prohibit many veterinarians from carrying and administering controlled substances at clients' properties.  Officials with the Drug Enforcement Administration have said veterinarians need to keep controlled substances in one place or register every location where they will be used. Information from the agency indicates the restrictions are mandated by federal law passed by Congress, and legislation would be needed to change them. Click here to read the letter sent to the DEA addressing these issues. Read more...

Lessons Learned from Hacker's
 Assault on Animal Hospital
By Seth Davis (reprint from AAHA NEWStat) -
"Today, with everything being paperless, you could literally lose your whole business in the snap of a finger if you don't have the right backups."  Those words weren't spoken by someone trying to market a high-tech solution to manage veterinary practices' digital data. They came from Mike Krajewski, practice manager at Dr. Nina's Animal Hospital in Sarasota, Fla., who came out on the losing side of a battle with a malicious Russian hacker.  Read more...

Build the Importance of Preventive Healthcare with Partners for Healthy Pets Power Tools

AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference - Learn and LeadIt's been said that leadership cannot really be taught. It can only be learned. To lead, one has to want to learn - one has to know and appreciate what it takes to lead.  If you have a desire to lead and are looking for ways to expand your view of what makes an effective leader, then the AVMA's Veterinary Leadership Conference is for you.  The Veterinary Leadership Conference, held Jan. 3-6 at the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel in Chicago, allows you to take advantage of workshops and networking opportunities with your veterinary colleagues and leaders in the veterinary profession. The topics covered are targeted specifically to veterinarians, with learning tracks for emerging leaders, as well as state and allied representatives. The conference is open to all veterinary professionals interested in learning more about leadership, team building and management, and how the AVMA works with you and for you.
