PATC's 24th Western States Training Conference

It's time again to sign up for Public Agency Training Council's 24th Western States Training Conference (WSTC) in Las Vegas, NV! The WSTC is a two-week conference that is packed with an amazing line-up of classes. All classes are available for individual sign-up through open registration. Classes are held November 28 - December 2 and December 5-9, 2016. Spots fill quickly, sign up today!

Why attend?

The WSTC is unique for a few reasons:
  1. We are able to bring more instructors/featured guests in for our WSTC classes, which adds a unique perspective to many of our tried and true classes.

  2. Everything is in one convenient location. The hotel and conference center are together, which eliminates the need for driving between the training site and the hotel each day.

  3. Officers from all over the country and even abroad come to this event. This is a great way to network with other attendees and meet many of the PATC instructors and staff.

FITNESS TIP - from The Cooper Institute
Plyometrics, Olympic lifts, and sandbag or medicine ball slam, throw, and toss exercises can be used to increase power. Power is important to everyday movements as well as sport and job related demands. Yet, proper biomechanics and appropriate progressions of exercises like those in this video are important to optimize results and safety.

INTERVIEW TIP from John E. Reid & Assoc.
Word Games Deceptive Suspects Play

Properly socialized people do not enjoy lying. None of us invite the feelings of guilt, fear or anxiety associated with telling a lie. On the other hand, we also don't like to tell the truth when the truth may cause loss of pride, esteem, income or freedom. Consequently, when a deceptive suspect is interviewed he tries to respond to questions in a manner that avoids telling a lie, but also avoids incriminating himself.

A common technique to accomplish this goal is evasion, where the suspect answers a question with a question. This is illustrated in a television advertisement where a family no longer has money to afford sushi. The daughter, holding an empty gold fish bowl asks, "Has anyone seen Captain Stuey and Little Miss Neptune?" The father, in between bites of sushi responds, "Did you look all over the place - under your desk?"

An evasive response is easy to identify and represents a fairly crude effort to avoid telling a lie. There are, however, more sophisticated verbal techniques deceptive suspects utilize to avoid lying to an investigator. This web tip addresses these word games.

STREET CRIMES TIP - from StreetCrimes.com
Police Ambushes

It doesn't matter if you police in a big city or small town, you are always a potential ambush target. It's a sad reality that today, copycat incidents are a serious threat to LEO's. Many officers are caught off-guard being too complacent on the street. Smart LEO's will always be thinking tactically smart.

The following tactical tips will keep you safer and more effective as you patrol the streets of your city or town:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Know your patrol area inside and out. * Don't fall into a predictable routine.
  • Check your rear view and side mirrors often to see if anyone is following you while on patrol.
  • Slow down your approach when responding to radio calls for service. No matter what type of call you are responding to, always be alert and never let your guard down.
  • Kill your lights when you approach the scene of a call.
  • Good tactical cops will always be evaluating cover on their approach to any scene in case things go bad and they come under-fire. You're going to want to make the smartest choice possible for your safety.
  • Lastly, tactically visualize in your mind what response you might take if you find yourself in a bad situation.        .
