Are we Really in the "Fall Boating Season" ???

Suddenly it's back to school, the long Labor Day weekend, boat show ads and advanced ticket sale notices. During the day the weather still is saying "summer", but there is a subtle coolness at night and it's getting darker much earlier... Yikes, it must be true - Enjoy it while you can!

Hint: Starting this weekend, most popular harbors and anchorages are much less crowded.

Fell's Point Fun Festival
SEPT 30th - OCT 2nd

This year listen to over 10 live artists on 2 different stages celebrating the festival's 50th year!

The Fell's Point Fun Festival began as a small neighborhood festival 50 years ago as a way to raise money to fight against a project that would have linked I-83 and I-95 by building an elevated highway along the north shore of the Baltimore Harbor.

BUT, we should all pay attention to  the forecast track of the remnants of Hurricane Hermine. She's moving up the  coast, reaching our area by late Friday, slowing down and likely staying for a while. Winds have decreased substantially, but there is still the potential of 4" of rain and strong & gusty winds and flooding, depending on the storm track.

PLEASE Check your Dock Lines & Fenders and Double-Up as Required to Keep your Boat Safe  !!!

Sept. 9-11

One-hundred years ago last month, the National Park Service was born, and nine years after its creation, the NPS named Baltimore's Fort McHenry one of its first national parks. The site protected the city from British invasion during the War of 1812, now known as Defender's Day, and thus inspired the national anthem. On Sept. 9-11, commemorate these historic events with reenactments, cannon firings, colonial music, and family activities, including festive fireworks and a patriotic concert by the United States Army Field Band on Saturday, and a special 9/11 memorial ceremony on Sunday.

HampdenFest
Sept. 17th

HampdenFest began as a local community event organized by the Hampden Village Merchants Association and the Hampden Community Council, but in recent years has evolved into a neighborhood arts festival that draws visitors, as well as local residents, to enjoy the community of merchants on and around West 36th Street. HampdenFest features three stages of music and art performances, an activity area for kids, as well as four blocks of arts and crafts vendors and other wares from a wide range of merchants and artists. Hampden itself has hundreds of local businesses which are consistently listed in Baltimore Magazine and the City Paper's Best of Baltimore.

For seekers of great food and an engaging atmosphere, HampdenFest offers an abundance of Baltimore, Chesapeake Bay and local Hampden cuisine, including pit beef, crab cakes, and locally brewed beer. A mix of national and local indie rock, folk, punk, and acoustic bands will perform throughout the day.

The festival is also sponsored by many local community leaders and merchants, working to encourage the continued improvement and economic vitality of our neighborhood and the arts.

Safe Boating at Night...Proper Lights

It's getting dark earlier and you may find yourself coming home after dark. Boating at night can be very enjoyable but also can be very dangerous. Proper lighting on your boat, as well as being able to identify the direction other boats are traveling is critical.

Night navigation requires skill and
concentration. Familiar objects in daylight look entirely different at night. Reflections in the windshield can be confusing. Night vision can drastically change by bridge and city lights, as well as other boaters who are careless with spot or docking lights.

Here are a few tips to remember regarding navigational lights while boating at night:
  • Know the types of lights you'll see - red, green and white and what they mean.
  • Make sure your running lights are operating and are not blocked from another mariner's view.
  • A spotlight should only be used for docking or finding a buoy.    NOTE: The Coast Guard prohibits docking lights /spotlights being on constantly while under way.
  • Dim the backlighting on your electronics and boats gauges; turn off cabin lights or use red lighting.
  • Assume that other boaters do not see your running lights.
As the old saying goes, "When two lights you see ahead, turn your helm and show your red"...helps avoid potential collisions at night.
Save the Date -  Oct 15th & 16th
Baltimore Fleet Week

The Maryland Department of Commerce and partners welcome back the U.S. Navy Blue Angels to Baltimore,  October 15-16. The air show will  take place during the inaugural Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore, a free 6-day festival celebrating the rich naval traditions of the Chesapeake Bay and the contributions of Maryland to the defense of the nation.

The Blue Angels, the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, will be based at Martin State Airport and performing in Baltimore for the third time during the Star-Spangled Air Show, a two-day event featuring multiple acts flying above the waters of the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.
