The 28th Annual Baltimore Parade of Lighted Boats

Saturday night, Baltimore welcomes the 28th Annual Parade of Lighted Boats. Produced by the Fells Point Yacht Club, the parade route will be through the Fells Point and Inner Harbor areas.  The plan is for two complete passes around the parade route for all boats.

The boats will be judged and prizes awarded.  The prizes to be awarded will be for Best in Parade-Overall, Best Theme of Christmas, Best Illuminated, Best Large Power Boat, Best Small Power Boat, Best Large Sail Boat, and Best Small Sail Boat and Work Boats.

Parade groups will begin forming at 5:30 p.m., as directed by the Parade Marshall and the assisting Safety Boats.  The parade will start at 6:00 p.m. in Fells Point and proceed to the Inner Harbor arriving about 6:30 p.m for the first of  two passages, back and forth from Fells Point to the Inner Harbor.  The Parade lasts about two hours, and will be followed by an awards banquet at the Polish Home Club, 512 S Broadway in Fells Point.

Navionics Introduces "A Unique Breakthrough" in Navigation Apps.

Navionics has introduced "Dock-to-Dock Autorouting" which quickly calculates a detailed route through narrow passages and channels in the Boating app on iPhones and iPads.  It uses chart data and navigation aids to determine a safe route from A to B.

Choose your destination by
selecting a point of interest, entering a lat/long or by tapping on the map. Autorouting quickly calculates a detailed route.

Navionics reminds you to remember "always keep in mind that a route automatically calculated by Autorouting does not replace safe navigation practices and should never be your only reference".    Amen to that!

Considering a Tablet for Navigation ?

If you are considering gifting (or getting) a tablet for marine navigation, the warnings of "Buyer Beware" are critically important. It seems there are various types of GPS in tablets, and some GPS terms invented by the manufacturers
that aren't quite kosher. That's because they are using the cell phone network for location assistance!

Traditional marine GPS units, including handheld units from Garmin, Magellan, Delorme, ACR and others, have real "talk only to the GPS satellite" GPS.  Another GPS designation "Assisted GPS" or "A-GPS" used by some tablet and phone manufacturers uses some satellite data but relies on triangulation (actually, multilateration) leaning heavily on the cellular network to complement the basic GPS functionality for increased speed and accuracy. The cellular aspect also helps when the satellites are blocked from view and allows faster initial booting. It also won't give you your location outside of cellular range!

A tablet with a "real" GPS chip will often also receive signals from the Russian GLONASS GPS system for added redundency.  Do your homework!   For android units, see the LG G-pad or the ASUS 16GB Z300C-A1 ZenPad. Be aware that many Windows and Apple tablets do not include GPS, where the less expensive Android tablets do (go figure).

For fun, on a flight to Florida last year,
I fired up my LG 10" G-Pad and opened an app called "GPS Test Plus" (see screen shot), which displayed satellite signal strength, accuracy, speed and altitude (much to the flight attendant's dismay). I then opened the Navionics charting App and followed our course. A civilian military contractor sitting behind me looked on, showing me where the Nuclear Sub pens and ammo arsenals were along the coast... great fun !

"In The Heart Of The Sea"
In theaters Dec. 11th

In 1820, crewmen (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean.

Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write "Moby-Dick."
