Fell's Point Festival
October 2-4, 2015
49th Year for the Festival !
This is the PARTY of the YEAR!
___________________
Tiki Hut Party with Live Music Saturday 10/3/15
Party with live music at Henderson's Wharf Marina's "Tiki Hut" 5:30-8:30 pm
The Fell's Point Fun Festival began as a small neighborhood festival 49 years ago as a way to raise money to fight against a project that would have linked I-83 and I-95 by building an elevated highway along the north shore of the Baltimore Harbor.
This project would have entailed extensive demolition within Fell's Point, and the highway would have cut off the remainder of the neighborhood from the waterfront. Over the years, The Preservation Society has worked to maintain the 18th and 19th century character of the historic structures within Fell's Point.
The Society operates without cost to the city of Baltimore and it currently maintains many of the buildings as well as running historic tours of Fell's Point.
The Fell's Point Fun Festival has grown dramatically over the years and continues to have a large impact in maintaining the historic integrity of Fell's Point for businesses, residents and visitors.
Sunday Night - An Eclipsing SUPERMOON
(first time this combination of events has been seen since 1930)
The United States and much of the world will see skies graced by a bright, big moon that will be encapsulated in a total lunar eclipse late Sunday evening into early Monday, according to NASA. It will begin at 8:00 pm and the eclipse will peak around 10:00. This lunar combination is happening for the first time in 30 years and will not happen again until 2033.
The supermoon, which comes around once every year, will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter in the sky that evening before it is engulfed by an eclipse for more than an hour.
This eclipse is the fourth and final in the so called "blood moons," a phrase that has become popular to describe the four lunar eclipses we have seen in 2014 and 2015. Scientifically this is known as a "lunar tetrad."
The osprey, often referred to as "fish hawk," is an iconic bird that requires a clean environment and abundant food source-primarily menhaden and other fish. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Osprey Tracking Project allows students and teachers to track birds-ones they have seen during field experiences at CBF's Port Isobel Island or Arthur Sherwood education centers-from their home and classroom computers.
CBF's Osprey Tracking project started when conservation-minded Microwave Telemetry, Inc. (MTI) offered their services to support our education programs. The company manufactures devices researchers use to track avian and marine species.
After migrating to Central and South America for the winter months, ospreys return to the same nest sites on creeks, rivers, and shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay every year. Once they arrive they may travel many miles a day in search of supplies for their nest and fish for their young. With the Osprey Tracking Program, we can now track birds that CBF field program participants see while they are boating, canoeing, or exploring.
Schooner racing on the Chesapeake Bay is rooted in the trade rivalry between Baltimore, Maryland and Portsmouth/Norfolk, Virginia. The fastest sailing vessels delivered goods and people to their destinations and often garnered the best price for their cargo by beating slower schooners into port. They race today to celebrate that heritage.
The 16th annual Baltimore-Con once again brings hundreds of the world's greatest cartoonists and comics creators and millions of comic books to Baltimore. This year's THREE-DAY event will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 25-27!
Oct 24th - First-Ever Baltimore Craft Beer Festival Featuring 33 regional brew houses (and counting), this will be the largest gathering of Maryland craft brewers at one event in the state's history. Of course, there will be old standbys like Heavy Seas, Flying Dog, and Brewer's Art, but the organizers are also excited for up-and-coming outfits, like the Waverly Brewing Company and Suspended Brewing in Rockville, to be making their debut at the festival.
The festival will also feature a home-brew competition sponsored by Woodberry-based Nepenthe. Roughly 40 different home brewers will submit their recipes for a harvest ale to be reviewed by a panel of local experts.
The most interactive exhibit yet, the Living Seashore features two touchpools and a variety of hands-on experiences, giving kids of all ages the opportunity to explore the ever-changing Mid-Atlantic shoreline.
The exhibit takes you beyond the boardwalk to the crashing waves, sandy beaches and shifting dunes of the beach you thought you knew. You'll uncover the Mid-Atlantic shore's myriad hidden treasures while developing a new understanding of the things you typically find in this unique habitat.
