HonFest Baltimore -  June 13th & 14th

HonFest is a local tradition. The Bawlmer term of endearment, Hon, short for Honey, embodies the warmth and affection bestowed upon our neighbors and visitors alike by historic working-women of Baltimore. HonFest is an annual celebration in honor of these women.

Since 1994, HonFest has grown from a tiny Baltimore's Best Hon pageant behind Caf Hon, to a nationally recognized festival that covers four city blocks on Hampden's very own 36th Street.

NASA says current lull in major US hurricanes only happens once every 177 years

We're having a "hurricane drought," with nearly a decade passing without a category three or higher storm making landfall. Will our luck hold?

In the Northern Atlantic Ocean, a distinct hurricane season occurs from June 1 to November 30, sharply peaking from late August through September; the season's climatological peak of activity occurs around September 10 each season.

A new NASA study shows that such a "hurricane drought" only comes along once every 177 years.

While the study did not delve into the meteorological causes behind this lack of major hurricane landfalls, it appears it is a result of luck.  "The last nine hurricane seasons were not weak - storms just didn't hit the U.S., It seems to be an accident of geography, random good luck."

Even though the United States has certainly seen its share of destructive storms over the past nine years, we haven't gotten slammed by a category three or higher hurricane in nine years -- the longest stretch in which we've been free from such monster storms since 1850.

French Frigate Hermione to Visit - June 19-21

On March 19, 1780, the frigate Hermione left France and made the crossing to America  in 38 days, landing in Boston with the secret news that Lafayette had secured 5,500 French troops and five frigates for General Washington.

This Summer, a replica of the Hermione will visit the United States stopping in Baltimore on June 19-21 along with other Tall Ships participating in the Tall Ships Challenge Atlantic Coast 2015 tour.

Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race - June 14th

The 2015 theme is OUT OF THIS WORLD, celebrating the 25th year of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Kinetic Sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art custom built for the race. Each May, the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) hosts the East Coast Kinetic Sculpture Race Championship on the shore of Baltimore's Harbor. The eight-hour race covers 14 miles-mostly on pavement, but also including a trip into the Chesapeake Bay and through mud and sand.

Kinetic Grand ChampionshipKinetic Sculpture Racing traces its roots to Ferndale, California in 1969 when artist Hobart Brown upgraded his son's tricycle into a 5-wheeled pentacycle and was challenged to a race down Main Street. (Hobart did not win.) Over the decades since, the California race evolved into a 3-day all-terrain including treacherous sand dunes, water crossings, and elaborate sculptures and costumes.

The Paper Chart - Still the Best?

If you seriously follow marine electronics, you have probably read an article or two by Ben Ellison or perhaps heard him speak at a PassageMaker show.

This week he wrote a great piece that discusses the details and information on government paper charts versus different electronic formats - a subject dear to most boaters heart.

After hearing the explanation of the boat sailing in the Volvo race, who plowed into a well marked reef because the navigator "hadn't zoomed down far enough", many boaters are taking a second look at their chart plotters.

If you take your navigation seriously, take a few minutes and read Ben's post. If anything, it will make you scratch your head... then go straight to the boat and compare your plotter with the paper chart.    Have Fun.
