Responsibilities of the Captain

We see the fun plaques:  "The Captain's word is Law"....    or
"Marriages performed by the Captain are valid ONLY for the duration of the cruise"....

But what are the REAL responsibilities of the Captain ?

Three Major Responsibilities of Every Boater
  1. Practice good seamanship.
It is the responsibility of every boat or PWC operator to take all necessary action to avoid a collision, taking into account the weather, vessel traffic, and limits of other vessels. Such action should be taken in ample time to avoid a collision and at a safe distance from other vessels.
  2. Keep a proper lookout.
Failing to keep a sharp lookout is the most common cause of collisions. Every operator must keep a proper lookout, using both sight and hearing, at all times. Watch and listen for other vessels, radio communications, navigational hazards, and others involved in water activities.
  3. Maintain a safe speed.
Safe speed is the speed that ensures you will have ample time to avoid a collision and can stop within an appropriate distance. Safe speed will vary depending on conditions such as wind, water conditions, navigational hazards, visibility, surrounding vessel traffic density, and the maneuverability of your boat or PWC. Always reduce speed and navigate with extreme caution at night and when visibility is restricted.
Make your Plans NOW

Baltimore's three-year commemoration of the War of 1812 bicentennial will come to a close at the end of this summer. And it's going out with a literal bang.  Cannonfire and fireworks will pepper the conclusion of bicentennial celebrations across the state throughout the summer. The events will conclude with the 10-day Star-Spangled Spectacular in Baltimore on Sept. 6-16.

Like Sailabration, Star-Spangled Spectacular will again include tall ships and air shows by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, as well as a concert broadcast live from Pier VI and Fort McHenry to commemorate the writing of the National Anthem. Even before that, the summer will be packed with events leading up to the maritime festival.

We're taking reservations now for the Star Spangled Spectacular   Sept. 6 - 16'th.

Plan ahead, it's going to be a BUSY season !

In the Steering and Sailing Section 1 of the Coast Guard Navigation Rules, Rule 5 states that "Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision."     More.... Caesar's Horseshoe Casino - coming soon!

The Horseshoe is hiring and will open soon. It's an urban two-story casino, and will be the second largest casino in Maryland with a 122,000 sq. ft. gaming floor. The multi-million development will feature VLTs, table games, and a World Series of Poker room. A 20,000 sq. ft. "Baltimore Marketplace" featuring authentic Charm City food outlets, three premier restaurants, and several bars and lounges will round out the food and beverage offerings.

The $442 million development will be located along Russell Street on Baltimore's south side. As an urban casino, it will be designed to maximize connectivity with local hotels (and the marina!)        For More..... Click HERE

Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships, the Nia and Pinta, are set to dock at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, from May 10 through 18, with boarding opportunities available to the public. The ships are operated by the Columbus Foundation out of the British Virgin Islands.

The Nia
is an exact replica and was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools before her 1991 launch.

The Pinta, an authentic reproduction of Christopher Columbus' ship, was launched in 2005 in Valenca, Brazil. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours, private parties, and charters.

Both ships tour together as a sailing museum dedicated to educating the public and school children. Onboard exhibits highlight the history of the Age of Discovery, navigation of the era, how the ships were built, and a taste of what life was like more than 500 years ago.
