Educating a Client for a Project
By Joan Gibbs, Board Member, NKBA Manhattan Chapter

 |
Renovations are exciting, nerve-racking and even scary for both our clients and for us. Clients anticipate the wonderful changes the renovation will create in their lives. As professionals we know there are crucial and potentially difficult steps to be navigated before those enjoyable times happen. That's where we step in to educate and help our clients understand, anticipate and navigate the renovation process before the mess of demolition begins. We've already started that education as they chose fixtures, finishes, cabinetry, appliances, etc. Perhaps discussing a general outline of the process and introducing in advance the decisions to be made at each step will help them understand when the issues come up. As professionals we are thoroughly familiar with this process-our clients aren't. The average client renovates one and a half kitchens in a lifetime. Researching on the internet can sometimes overwhelm and confuse homeowners. That's where we step in and with our professional training guide them to that great outcome they anticipate.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Was it really JUST Labor Day? The rush of events, openings and industry news make it hard to believe that only a few weeks ago I was feeling slightly removed from it all!
Cosentino opens its new showroom in the A&D Building this month with an open house while Porcelanosa's new multi-story jewel box opens on Madison Square with a series of invitation-only parties. Fisher Paykel has scheduled a late year opening (also in the A&D) and recently named Paula Cecere Showroom Manager. Over at Monogram, Susan Cozzi has replaced Paula in that position. Congratulations to all concerned!
In other news, the rumor that Hafele will vacate its current location is true! John Risch remains silent as a quiet-glide partition about plans and it took all of my charms just to coax him into saying "it will be nearby." Stay tuned. You'll know when I know!
Closer to home, on Thursday, September 17th at 4:45 p.m., yours truly moderated a panel discussion on State of the Art Kitchens during the What's New What's Next Trade Event at The New York Design Center. Board member Dave Burcher, CKD, of In House Kitchen Bath Home participated as a panelist along with Alexandra Knight of Korts & Knight, Robert Bakes of Bakes & Kropp and Joy Young of Townhouse Kitchens.
On September 30th our chapter will be hosted by AXOR NYC Design Studio for a .01 CEU program on What Your Plumber Wishes You Knew. This program will offer credit not just for NKBA but for AIA and ASID as well! Thanks to Amanda Mobley, Design Studio Coordinator, for keeping the drains clear on this one!
Finally, I'd like to reiterate what an honor it was to be asked to address the Hafele Family Board of Directors in August, along with Dawn DeLuca, AKBD CAPS, to communicate the importance of strong relationships between trade organizations and product vendors. What we accomplish together is nothing short of heroic...and fun!
Won't you join us and be part of it?
