DESIGN INSPIRED BY CULTURE
Thermador brought cultural inspiration to the members of NKBA Manhattan and guests with a program on Kosher kitchen design. The June 24th evening program was presented by Rochelle Kalisch, CKD, of Regency Designs and Kitchens, a Kosher kitchen specialist.
Rochelle's presentation demonstrated how the Kosher kitchen functions and the needs of the Kosher cook. She also included some history on how the Kosher kitchen evolved. Members of the audience of all cultural persuasions learned some
Yiddish terminology, valuable design tips and an understanding of the importance of food, food handling and cooking methods as well as the required appliances, cookware, dishes, utensils and serve ware used in the preparation and serving of food in the Kosher culture.
NKBA Manhattan members and guests were also treated to wine and an array of both Kosher and non Kosher foods, prepared by chefs on the world class cooking equipment in the BSH showroom in the A&D Building. A great time was had by all.

A "BEST PRACTICE" STAYING INFORMED
|
While recently attending "The Real Business of Interior Design", a three day intensive course, I was reminded of the value of spending time "in the classroom". Brushing up on skills, whether product knowledge, technology related or best business practice is so important to keeping your business healthy. Join in a class, talk some shop and share and learn. It is good for both the mind and the bottom line.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As the fireworks and the sparklers of the 4th of July begin to fade and everyone settles into summer, thoughts of picnics, the beach and some down time allow busy New Yorkers time to relax. With that in mind, NKBA Manhattan will take a hiatus in August from our usual calendar of programs and educational events. We'll look forward to seeing you all again on September 30thh when we'll be hosted by Axor Hansgrohe for What Your Plumber Wishes You Knew. This program will offer .1 CEU for NKBA, AIA, NARI and IDCEC. Watch for details as you're shaking the sand from your shoes.
For those who attended our event on the Kosher Kitchen in June, speaker Rochelle Kalisch clarified and defined what Kosher means for today's kitchen designer (and homeowner) and how to designate areas for proper food preparation while following biblical law. With more than 40 attendees at this program, a lively discussion followed with questions about Shabbat Settings on appliances and kosher product labeling. Fun Fact: 1 in 10 New Yorkers keep Kosher!
Mazel Tov! Winners of our Kosher Kitchen drawing for a large marble rye bread, a chocolate cake and a carrot cake included Drew Rust from Walker Zanger, Carol Brewer of Carol Brewer Interiors and Joan Bigg of Joan Bigg Design. Congratulations and happy noshing to you all!
On July 13th your Board of Directors hosted the annual Board Dinner to welcome both voting and auxiliary appointees for 2016 and to thank the members who have served us so well during 2015. This year's host was HG Stones.
In closing, I hope I can count on your attendance at the annual NKBA / IFDA Sparkling Summer Social on Thursday, July 23rd on the rooftop at Grohe America. Dress in white for a night under the stars!
Kent Brasloff
