GE MONOGRAM DELIVERS
Chapter Members Treated to All-Expense-Paid Tour of GE Monogram Factory & Experience Center
Story by Kent Brasloff, NKBA-Manhattan Chapter President

In March, members of NKBA Manhattan and Westchester traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, as the guests of GE Monogram, to tour the company's  900-acre factory and training facility.  During four days of product demonstrations, tours, training lectures, and hands-on experience with the Monogram brand, attendees came away with a thorough knowledge of what makes Monogram tick, spin, freeze, and broil!

First stop was 1st Build, an idea lab where new product ideas are conceived and receive their initial development. In another building, attendees observed 3-D printers churn out everything from replacement-part prototypes to miniature models of extraordinary detail and even delicacy.  Later, guests toured the all-union facility where Monogram refrigerators are made, and witnessed the entire manufacturing process, from the pouring of molds for appliance interiors to the soldering of plumbing parts, to watching the completed product roll off of the assembly line.

One afternoon, each attendee was given the experience of designing on paper a  prototype of the perfect range and cooktop. This exercise was followed by a close-up inspection of the four top GE Monogram product brands.  Having all of the ranges in one room presented the perfect hands-on opportunity to explore the differences and similarities of each model and try out their many features, including turning knobs, pulling out racks, and comparing leg styles.

Michelle Abell, MEC training manager, led intensive daily lectures and Q&A sessions on a wide range of Monogram products, from dishwashers to microwaves.  Her intimate knowledge of the products, along with over 20 years experience with Monogram, made her the perfect instructor. Quality time was spent in the test kitchens too. When Chef Brian Logsdon and Chef Joe Castro were not busy cooking up fantastic meals, they provided tutorials on the finer points of working with Monogram products like the induction cooktop and the Advantium oven. NKBA designers were then divided into teams and challenged to an "Iron Chef" contest with a secret ingredient-pretzels. Team Dawn De Luca won with pretzel and molasses coated bacon and a pretzel-crusted frittata.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of MEC Concierge Nancy Wolff, who made all of the travel arrangements and saw that every need and dietary requirement were met with speed, grace, and generosity. Thank you Monogram for an amazing and informative week in Louisville!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A MEMBER?

We Want You!

NKBA-Manhattan is currently looking for talented professionals to fill board positions and auxiliary membership. If you or someone you know is interested, contact Toni Sabatino, VP of Membership at tonisab@optonline.net.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

If you came out of hibernation this winter, you may have joined us in February for our event on faucet design, hosted by Gracious Home and featuring Franco Platini from Zucchetti Italy.

Or you may have been one of the lucky 17 who went down to Louisville, Kentucky in March for the GE Monogram-funded trip to their 900-acre Factory and Experience Center! A BIG shout-out goes to all the great folks down there who gave so generously of their time and expertise in educating us about the Monogram brand.

Closer to home, there was a huge turnout (one of the best ever) for the Architectural Digest Home Design Show. Kitchen, bath and hardware continue to take a healthy slice of the real estate pie. This month we'll be among the first to see the renovated Walker Zanger showroom on East 20th Street with a relaxed evening of cocktails, networking, and light fare.  Please plan to join us and see what's trending in tile!

In June, Chapter Sponsor Thermador, will host us with a program on Kosher kitchens.  Guest speaker (and NKBA member) Rochelle Kalish will instruct us in the forms and norms of Kosher dietary laws, keeping it Kosher in limited space and safe serving options for Shabbat.

We all love good news and good value, so I'm pleased to close with this: NKBA Manhattan will now be offering most of its chapter events for free with advanced registration!  If you're a paid member in good standing, you can expect two rock'n socials, six to nine CEU opportunities, networking with your peers, great product and service give-a-ways and an all-expense paid (up to $3000) educational tour of a major manufacturer's production facility, that is, if you're one of the first 25 people to sign up!

If you're not a member but are interested in becoming one, reach out to our VP Membership, Toni Sabatino, or to any chapter officer about our low-fee individual membership.  We'll be happy to walk you through the registration process. There's never a dull moment at NKBA-Manhattan.  Won't you join us and be a part of the excitement?
