KBIS 2015 RELOADED

by Jesus Santos, NKBA-Manhattan Newsletter Editor

What happens in Vegas, doesn't always stay in Vegas. Especially when it's bursting at the seams, like this year's KBIS. The product-packed, action-packed, exhibits-till-you-drop-flat K&B show was only part of a much larger consortium experience called Design & Construction Week (DCW) 2015, and the biggest Las Vegas design event to date, drawing professionals from every area of the industry.

The five-show mega event, held from January 18th to 25th, included the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the International Builder's Show (IBS), and the International Window Coverings Expo under one roof at the Las Vegas Convention Center; while partnering events, such as the International Surface Event and the leviathan-sized furniture complex at World Market Center, were just a stone's throw away.

DCW 2015 promised to bring something for everyone. And it did, big time, paying out in spades to interior designers, decorators, builders, vendors, and manufacturers alike. Powerhouse presentations at the IBS High Performance Building Zone kept sustainability buffs pumped. K&B designers were astonished by TOTO's self-cleaning toilets as well as wine wall refrigerators by Thermador. And for design eye candy junkies, Walker Zanger's fashion-forward tiles, alligator-skin sink surfaces, and bathtubs in the shape of stilettos kept design veins pumping with pleasure. The NKBA also offered a large booth that hosted lectures and educational programs throughout the show. There was even something for techies! The National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) 2015 New American Home was a design geek's dream come true, featuring a ground-up, high-tech construction tucked into the mountainous Las Vegas landscape. It offered a glimpse into the future of American home life while paving new roads for efficiency, technology, and the home building industry. For more details on the 2015 New American Home, visit www.tnah.com.

And if that is not enough, NKBA-Manhattan's own Toni Sabatino photo-journaled the massive array of products at KBIS while a committed Kent Brasloff posted a three-part series on his Las Vegas rendezvous, filled with colorful anecdotes of locals, street performers, parties, concerts, and more. FROM OUR PRESIDENT

For those of us who dodged stormy weather and delayed flights to attend KBIS in glittering Las Vegas, there was little to disappoint.  Beginning with the State of the Industry Address, which was delivered by Kevin Murphy, C.O.O. of Ferguson, "the K&B industry is on the upswing with 12.1% industry-wide growth projected for 2015 and 36% projected growth in the e-commerce sector."
The membership was also informed that the co-location of KBIS and IBS will continue through 2020, returning to the desert in 2016, then moving briefly to Orlando for 2017 and 2018 before jetting west again to the Strip.

The huge show floor, spread across two buildings, offered emerging trends while reinforcing products that have performed over time.  Stainless continues unabated. Wood, both lush and rough-hewn, was everywhere. Sculptural bathing vessels (tubs) are having a moment. Electric blue is THE color. And cabinet and closet interiors were customized to the last centimeter.

There were also more than 90 CEU offerings to choose from, including our own Dave Burcher's course "Technical Difficulties": Innovative Solutions to Challenging Design Requests. The Manhattan Chapter turned out in full force, filling an entire row to cheer Dave on.  And in the evenings we let our hair down, dancing at club Excess in the Wynn Hotel, dining in superb restaurants across the city, or enjoying the street shows all along the Strip. KBIS 2015 rocked more than just the Casbah!

Back in New York, our February Chapter Event, hosted by Gracious Home will feature Franco Platini from Zucchetti Italy who will be speaking on faucet design.  Be sure to attend and put your card in for our drawing of two GH gift certificates and a Zucchetti faucet!

In March, we're off to the GE Monogram facility in Louisville, Kentucky for four days of product instruction, cooking, and eating.  We'll also be at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show.In April, we'll slow down with a relaxed cocktail reception at Walker-Zanger.

There's never a dull moment at NKBA-Manhattan.Won't you join us and be a part of the excitement?
