Bringing Some Sanity to March Madness

To Our Elite Membership NAIFA-WV:

March Madness again... not just college basketball time... although it is great to see Marshall hitting the 90's in scoring and WVU in and out of the Top Ten every week...

March Madness seems to be catching... politics... uproars and unsettling... nationally and here at home...

March Madness seems to be a virus... economy... big swings in market up 2% down 2%... every day is a new frontier in the markets it seems.

March Madness weather wise... El Niño & La Niña (these are not two new drinks at Las Agaves)... warmer seas causing havoc on predictions in weather...

March Madness affecting our business... with the D.O.L. proposed regulations and suitability being questioned more than ever for product selection by financial representatives... it feels like March Madness all the time lately.

So where does the average Financial Advisor go to find some peace in these March Madness days? Where does the Financial Advisor find the common sense to help his or her client who is being bombarded by all of the March Madness noted above?

Thankfully... we still have each other as a co-operative group to support, listen and share ideas that can bring some peace to our clients and each other.

Thankfully... we have an organization that speaks for us to legislative leaders and hopefully add some cooling ideas to the warm breezes blowing out of Washington.

Thankfully... for our clients and potential clients we can guide them into balanced portfolios, guaranteed income options, guaranteed life insurance coverage and common sense planning that can weather any El Niño & La Niña of our needs in living.

These are not the days for us to run for cover and bring out the tarps to cover the field, nor circle the wagons and prepare for the onslaught of attack...it is the time to bring a professional calming and common sense peace to your clients in these March Madness days.

You are a professional financial advisor. Life insurance and annuity products are still needed. Balanced portfolios and asset allocations are still viable recommendations after you know a client's needs. Income with guarantees makes a lot of sense in these days of uncertainty.

Thank the Good Lord above that we have folks like you in our organization that can bring some saneness in a world where March Madness bounces us up and down.

See you at the next scheduled meeting.

George Webb

Steve Tilka is the newest addition Liberty Mutual's leadership team as the manager of the WV sales team. He is certainly no stranger to insurance sales and team building. His experiences in start-up and large companies have shaped his leadership perspective.

For 14 years, Steve worked as a part of a management team that built "start-up" life insurance companies in Ohio and in Kentucky. His sales career began in 1988 as an agent then he was quickly promoted through the ranks. In these roles, his work centered on coaching and developing agents in the field. His knack for attracting and developing winning sales talent placed his teams consistently among the President's Circle and Chairman's Club ranks.

Steve later entered the multi-line insurance space by joining Allstate's field sales leadership team where he spent seven years as a sales manager, business coach, and front-line resource for more than 30 Allstate agencies where his teams consistently earned top sales honors (& trips!!)

He credits his successes to the hard work of his people, their trust in him as their leader, and to his mentors over the years who have been his thought partners.

Steve Tilka holds a B.S. degree in Finance from Indiana University and has nearly completed his M.B.A. Steve and his wife Tracey have been married 23 years and are blessed with sons Luke (14) and Chaz (9). They relocated to West Virginia after spending 22 years in Kentucky. Steve stays grounded with his Christian faith, enjoys golf, fishing, and being a dad. He admits, "the challenge of raising boys is one thing that helps keep his leadership skills sharp!"

NAIFA Letter Urges OMB To Ensure DOL Fiduciary Rule Is Workable

NAIFA has submitted comments to the White House Office of Management and Budget urging OMB to ensure that the Department of Labor's proposed fiduciary rule "reflects a careful assessment of the economic and other impacts it will have on American investors, small businesses, or the investment advisor community."

DOL sent the proposed regulation to OMB for mandatory review on January 28. The current version of the rule has not been made public, but earlier versions contain provisions that would be unworkable for advisors and their clients.

NAIFA has asked OMB during its review to pay close attention to how the DOL rule could reduce retirement investors' access to affordable, personalized advice; limit access to investment education; force small investors into fee-only arrangements that may not fit their individual desires or needs; place an unreasonable administrative burden on advisors; unnecessarily increase liability for advisors; and make it more difficult for consumers to obtain guaranteed-income annuity products.

NAIFA Congressional Conference

Let's go to Washington, DC!

In the past three years, over 2,500 NAIFA members from every corner of the country came to Washington, DC and took to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers and advise them on how their decisions affect agents, brokers, and their clients.

On May 24th-25th, 2016 NAIFA will be holding its 2016 Congressional Conference with a similar goal - to establish and cultivate relationships with lawmakers, to share the expertise of NAIFA members, and educate them on the value of life insurance, annuities, retirement savings, and employee benefits for 75 million American families.
