 President's Message
Gary W. Kelley, CLU, LUTCF 2014-2015 NAIFA-WV President
As fall arrives in the mountain state, I wonder where the summer has gone. Kids are back in school and time marches on. The older I get the faster the time passes. At the time this is written, we have a super-star Sales Congress scheduled in Charleston and the National NAIFA Convention in San Diego is upon us. I will be representing WV and look forward to fellowship with our brothers and sisters of our industry.
I feel that we are at a point in our business where we as a group must take a stand for our customers and our industry to ward off the multitude of attempts to destabilize the accumulation that our customers have acquired in their life insurance and annuities by our members of congress. How do we stand up and be listened to? Through strength in numbers. Our membership levels have been trending in the wrong direction for the past several years, and we must work to stop this regression. I am asking that each of us take a personal stake in this effort by talking hard facts with two agents that live within your market and let them know what's going to happen to their business if we are not standing as a unified group against those who wish to have the government control our customers' resources. Please commit to doing this within the next 30 days, and let's see if we can begin the process of returning to a strong and forceful voice in WV and the nation.
The reason we are in this business is to protect the values that the public has worked hard to accumulate. With the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, families are what's important and we help hold the financial side together, because of the work we do. May the last part of this year provide you much success and continued growth. Please reach out to me if and when I can be of service to you.
God Bless.
Gary W. Kelley, CLU, LUTCF

NAIFA-North Cental Fall Kickoff Legislative Update Meeting Recap
NAIFA-North Central held it's Annual Legislative Update luncheon on August 21, 2014 at the Lakeview Resort & Spa in Morgantown, WV. This year's guest was 1st District Congressman David McKinley.
From left to right: Cifford Marstiller, NAIFA-WV Board Member; Bob Hurley, NAIFAPAC Chairman; Congressman David McKinley; Raymond Prendergast, NAIFA-North Central President; John Pauley, NAIFA-WV Executive Director; Curtis Shinn, NAIFA-WV Board Member; and James Peterson, NAIFA-Charleston President.
NAIFA-North Central Meeting HighlightNAIFA-WV Executive Director John Pauley opened the meeting by reviewing several NAIFA Federal issues as well as highlighting the positive role agents play in the creation of jobs and infrastructure while protecting over 75 Million families and businesses with life insurance, disability benefits, retirement annuities, and other financial products.
The meeting was very productive as the Congressman updated attendees on several issues of concern including tax reform, social security, Obamacare, the Federal deficit and several other economic initiatives. He expressed serious concern regarding the future of our country given the current liberal agenda and it's devastating impact on future generations and their ability to achieve "the American dream". The meeting concluded with a lively Q&A session moderated by NAIFA-North Central President Raymond Prendergast.
We want to thank Congressman McKinley for his service and commitment to his constituents as well as his support of the insurance and financial services industry.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month
There's a growing crisis of underinsurance - too many Americans without adequate life insurance. According to LIMRA, 30% of U.S. households have no life insurance whatsoever. That's why each September Life Happens coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month. This industry-wide campaign is aimed at encouraging all Americans to take stock of their life insurance needs.
This campaign also offers you the perfect opportunity to talk to people in your community about their life insurance needs - at a time when life insurance may already be on their minds. Life Happens offers you a wide range of tools and resources to make that job easier.
This year, Life Happens has invited retired NFL MVP quarterback Boomer Esiason to return for a second year as the LIAM celebrity spokesperson. Click HERE for more information about this year's public awareness campaign and how to utilize LIAM in your business plan.

FROM THE NAIFA BLOG:
Difficulties Faced by New ACA Enrollees Show the Importance of Professional Advisors
As the Affordable Care Act was being drafted and then implemented over the past few years, NAIFA has worked hard to ensure that health advisors remain part of the system. Services and expertise provided by brokers and agents are important to consumers across the board, from small business owners trying to adjust to new requirements to individuals who have never had health coverage before and do not know how it works. A recent New York Times article illustrates a problem faced by many consumers who did not consult a licensed advisor. Salwa Shabazz selected a low-premium plan on the federal marketplace after speaking with a marketplace customer service representative, the Times article says. Only after she was enrolled did she discover the plan has a deductible and requires copayments that are beyond her ability to pay.
But help is available. A recent survey of NAIFA members found that nearly three-quarters (73 percent) had enrolled clients in health plans through either the federal or a state exchange or both. NAIFA members are trained and licensed. They are subject to continuing education requirements, and many have years of experience dealing with insurance companies and the health care system.
"NAIFA members are here to help," said NAIFA President John Nichols. "In fact, we've dedicated our professional lives to helping people understand complex insurance and fianancial matters. The ACA has altered the landscape of health insurance, so the expertise of NAIFA members is as important now as it ever was."
The NAIFA Blog provides timely analysis, context and commentary on important issues shaping the industry. The blog also is a place to present the role of the agent and the services they provide, and it will cover newsworthy happenings within the association. Visit the blog at www.naifablog.com.

Please consider a contribution to YOUR Political Action Committee! The Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC) is a term used to describe collectively the PAC sponsored by NAIFA at the federal level and the PACs sponsored by each state association. Each PAC is a fund that supports the campaigns of candidates for public office who understand issues important to insurance agents and financial advisors. IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of local NAIFA associations may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier.
