Junior LegislatorsJunior Legislators
Junior Girl Scouts (Troop 247 pictured right) had a chance encounter with  Governor McAuliffe during their recent trip to the Capitol for Junior Legislative Day.

Girls spent the afternoon visiting Richmond City Council Chamber members, taking a tour of the Capitol  and voting on a mock bill in the House of Representatives. They also met the first family of Virginia's dog. 

On the same day, older Girl Scouts were able to participate in Girl Scout Legislative Day and visit the the Supreme Court of Virginia and The Library of Virginia. 
Bronze Award: Little Free Library
As part of their Bronze Award project, Junior Troop 5184 created the Little Free Library outside of the Richmond Community HoLittle Free Libraryspital.


Girls of Troop 5184 got a tour of the Richmond Community Hospital, founded in b1895 by Sara Garland Jones,the first African- American woman licensed to practice medicine in Virginia.  They met Dr. Angie Strickland, head of the hospital's ER department, toured the ER but most importantly, learned what a difference their book donations are making in this community.  They have collected 1400 books toward their goal of 6,000 books!  The library was built by kids for kids. The hospital plans to expand the program and involve their partnership with community groups.

  • Girls who register by June 15, 2015*, will receive a free patch. 
  • 01 Troop Leaders can save up to $20 in the retail shop by registering by the deadline. 

*If Early Bird registration is completed through COMAR, the deadline is June 15 at 11:59pm. Early Bird registrations completed by mail must be postmarked on or before June 15.

 

 

PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES

GSLI Girl Scout Leadership Institute 

July 31-August 2, 2015

The leadership skills girls develop through Girl Scouts, such as problem solving and a willingness to seek and take on challenges, contribute to their academic engagement and achievement - the foundation they will need to build a better world.

The 2015 Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI)  will be held July 31-August 2 at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA. Girl Scouts currently in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are eligible to attend this weekend program where they will engage, develop, and foster their leadership skills, achieving the objectives and desired outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. USO Cookie Drop
GSCV joins forces with the USO 

Last week, Girl Scouts showed their respect and appreciation for service men and women either departing to or returning from their missions with  17,508 boxes of Girl Scout cookies!  This partnership between Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the USO, was selected as the charity of choice for this year's Operation Appreciation, an important component of the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program. The USO was GSCV's recipient of the council wide Gift of Caring project called Operation Appreciation.

GSCV believes that Operation Appreciation will give Girl Scouts the opportunity to see how their hard work and dedication to Girl Scouting makes the world a better place, one soldier at a time.


Stellar Seller 2015 Top Cookie Sellers

It's business, girl business! There are some serious Cookie Boss Girl Scouts in central Virginia. More than $230,000 worth of Girl Scout Cookies were sold by a total of 57 girls! These girls became the top cookie sellers for the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Congratulations and way to go, girls!

This year's Volunteer Kick-Off events will be better than ever! Come meet community partners, shop the latest and greatest Girl Scout gear, and have fun with a few hundred of your closest Girl Scout peers! This event will provide tools to help leaders engage and incorporate parents in a meaningful way. Girls will be leading a few sessions, so don't miss out on their perspective. Theran Fisher of Floricane, LLC will lead the August 8th event with a session on time management and rediscovering your Girl Scout passion. An awards ceremony will honor volunteers. Registration is now open on COMAR.
