In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Last spring, in an effort to talk about financial responsibility, the leaders of Troop 5159 talked to their troop about what they should do with their income from Cookie Sales. They explained the concept of "save a third, spend a third, share a third". The girls (then Brownies, now Juniors) agreed that this was a good idea, so they did the math and "saved" 1/3 of our profits in the bank, then voted to "spend" 1/3 on a Roller Skating Party. The remaining 1/3 was the "share", so they voted on a non-profit to donate the money to. Since one of the Girl Scouts recently lost her beloved grandmother to breast cancer, they voted to donate their money to the Ellen Shaw de Paredes Breast Cancer Foundation. They made a giant check for the occasion and they delivered that check (and the real check!).

It went a long way for them to be so involved in the whole process--from choosing the charity, to making the check, to getting to hand it over. This is the beginning of much community service and charity for this great group of girls.

WOW Journey

Sandy Mueller from the Department of Environmental Quality worked with Troop 339 on water quality and even helped them collect and test water samples from a local creek! It was a great way to help learn about water quality and pollution when working on their WOW Journey.

SU Delegate Elections

Attention: Service Unit Delegate Elections are to take place during the month of October for the upcoming Annual Meeting set for March 7, 2015.

Each service unit is allowed one delegate and one alternate.  Service units with girl membership of two hundred or more girls on September 30, shall elect one more delegate.

If a delegate or alternate was newly elected in the fall of 2013, the volunteer can continue to serve in the role for the 2015 Annual Meeting. If the current delegate or alternate is unable to serve for the 2015 Annual Meeting, a replacement should be elected. In an effort to improve the overall process, this fall elected delegates and alternates will be able to register their elected role using the COMAR system.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Attention Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors! You've all been making the world a better place, so lets recognize your dedication to the community. We hope you consider applying for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.

To apply you must do the following:

  • Apply online at www.nassp.org/spirit before November 4th.
  • Print a copy of your application and mail or hand deliver it to Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia, 4900 Augusta Avenue, Suite 200, Richmond, VA 23230 to the attention of Sheila Johnston, Chief Operating Officer before November 4th.

A panel of Girl Scout volunteers will review all applicants and choose one to nominate to the state level competition. You must complete both steps to the application process in order to be considered for the next level of competition.
