Pennsylvania Envirothon Scholarship Awards
| |
By Lorelle Steach
The Pennsylvania Envirothon is excited to celebrate 32 years of challenging more than a quarter million high school students with issues involving our valuable natural resources. Over the past 11 years, we have awarded more than $90,000 in scholarships to 145 students. In years past, the scholarship awards were made possible through grants and donations provided by the State Conservation Commission and various sponsors. In 2014, 53 Pennsylvania County Conservation Districts generously donated over $10,000 to fully fund the scholarship awards. THANK YOU!
The continued success of the Envirothon program reflects the commitment and outstanding efforts put forth by conservation districts, partners, sponsors and volunteers involved since the early days of the contest. After 32 years, we are now reaping the benefits of the Envirothon by having past participants become conservation district employees and directors, crucial decision makers, community leaders, as well as individuals who are changing the natural resource philosophy for upcoming generations.

Farming is the Focus of World Food Day, October 16
| |
First observed in 1981, World Food Day is a day to think about the global future and the role everyone plays in providing a more viable food supply. The theme for the 2014 designation is "Feeding the world, caring for the earth" and was selected to heighten awareness of family farming and smallholder farmers. It focuses attention on the paramount role family farming plays in eliminating hunger and poverty by offering food security and nutrition, enhancing livelihoods, managing natural resources, preserving the environment, and achieving sustainable development. The UN General Assembly has designated 2014 the "International Year of Family Farming."
For more information about World Food Day, visit www.fao.org/world-food-day/home/en. If your district is participating in any events in recognition of the observance, please send photos with captions to brandi-davenport@pacd.org for inclusion in an upcoming edition of Front Page.
