Two Conservation District Projects Need Your Vote!

Lackawanna and Lawrence Conservation Districts have entered the Pennsylvania American Water "Community Investment Challenge" contest. Facebook users will determine the grant awards. Voting is now open!

The district projects are:

  • Lackawanna County Conservation District -- Protecting Leggets Creek
  • Lawrence County Conservation District -- Rainbarrels for New Castle
Visit the Pennsylvania American Water Facebook Contest Page, like Pennsylvania American Water, click on the "Community Investment Challenge" tab, and vote for your favorite entry. You may vote once every 24 hours.  The deadline for voting is December 8, 2013. Awards will be announced in early December.

The top three projects receiving the most votes on the company's Facebook contest page will receive awards of $1,000 (first-place), $700 (second-place) and $300 (third place). Let's come together and vote for a conservation district to receive funding for their important projects!

Nearly 50 Now Trained on Manure Management

Jerry Martin, Penn State Senior Extension Associate teaches during the Nov. 12 "Train the Trainer" event in Clearfield County.

Through a grant from the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), PACD hosted two free trainings on the Manure Management Manual. The trainings were November 12 in Clearfield County and November 14 in Lancaster County. Dr. Douglas Beegle and Jerry Martin from Penn State trained nearly 50 participants.

Participants had this to say about the trainings:

  • "Definitely worth the time - great instructors."
  • "The detail the presentations go into for each section of the manual was very very helpful."
  • "I thought the workshop was very beneficial."

Financial support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection through the Chesapeake Bay Implementation Grant and the Clean Water Fund.

District Resources Needed for 2014 Farm Show

Once the holiday season rolls around, the one thing we continue talking about and thinking about is Farm Show! It's right around the corner!

We're currently taking inventory of materials and resources we have in stock for the 2014 exposition. Once the review is complete, we will reach out to districts for materials we may run out of. If any districts have developed new hand-outs on any of the programs you administer or have an updated overview piece on your district, we would love to highlight those materials as a part of the display as well.

The 2014 Farm Show runs Jan. 4 - 11. Volunteers are also still needed for the PACD booth. Please contact Brandi at brandi-davenport@pacd.org if interested in volunteering during the week-long event or if you have materials you'd like to send for showcasing.

Somerset Rain Garden - A Work in Progress

Work began in mid-October for the Somerset Conservation District's "Rain Garden" mini-grant project. This demonstration site and outdoor classroom is being constructed at Allegheny Community College. Financial and other support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
