State 4-H Wildlife Judging
Sullivan County 4-H Wildlife Judging team members participated in the State 4-H Wildlife Judging Contest held June 15-16 in Roan Mountain, TN.  This team of high school students earned the opportunity to participate in the state event by placing third at a regional event in May held in Knoxville, TN.  Participation in 4-H Wildlife Judging teaches youth how to identify wildlife species, habitat requirements for wildlife, and management practices to improve habitat.  This is done through educational practice sessions at the county level and participation in contests.  In addition participants learn valuable life skills including decision making, teamwork, responsibility and communication.  The Sullivan County team enjoyed a group hike to the balds on Roan Mountain where they learned about the unique ecosystem.  They also had the opportunity to visit the Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area for the contest portion of the event.  The team placed ninth overall in the state event.

State 4-H Horse Judging
4-H Horse Judging Team makes a big return to the arena!
The Sullivan County 4-H Horse Judging team made its appearance in the judging arena on Monday, June 20th at the 4-H State Horse Judging Contest in Shelbyville, TN.  The team comprised of Morgan Short, Emaline Cornett and Piper Morrison, did not disappoint. After not having a horse judging team in the county for over ten years, we are pleased that this team placed 8th overall in the state. The 4-H horse judging team put in countless hours of practice on various farms throughout the region, and their practice paid off during the rigorous contest.
"With an enthusiastic team you can achieve almost anything." -Tahir Shah

4-H Junior Summer Camp
Forty-one youth attended 4-H Junior Camp at the Clyde Austin 4-H Center in Greeneville, TN from June 20-24th.  Junior Camp is for youth who have completed grades 4-6.  Activities at the five-day camp include swimming, shooting sports, group sports and recreation, fishing, nature hikes, astronomy, geology, crafts, woodworking, T-shirt airbrushing, skits, music, and more!  The camping experience aids in youth development by fostering skills of responsibility, teamwork, building relationships and achieving goals.  The Clyde Austin 4-H Center also offers educational and exciting programs for students during the Camp Explore school year program.  For more information on a class participating in Camp Explore for the 2016-2017 school year contact the camp at 639-3811.

School's Out, Let's Cook-Out! School and Community Celebration

Sullivan County Schools will provide FREE lunches to Sullivan County students all summer.

School's Out, Let's Cookout! is a collaborative school and community effort that can help alleviate childhood hunger during the summer.  Hunger and poor nutrition are linked to physical, mental, and dental problems - and poor educational outcomes.

Summertime can be a carefree, relaxing season filled with cookouts, ice cream and picnics.  But for too many kids, summertime means having an empty stomach.  Child hunger and food insecurity can often peak when school is out.  It can be very overwhelming to those children who receive free or reduced-price meals at schools.

You can help make a difference by making a monetary donation or donation of food, feeding supplies, books and games.  Volunteers are also needed to help lead recreational activities such as sports or crafts, prepare food, help with outreach, etc.

When (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) and Where:

Thursday, July 7 - Mary Hughes

Thursday, July 14 - North Middle/High
