Race Car Visits Ketron 3rd Grade |
Third grade students have been doing a racing theme project to get ready for state tests. For the past several weeks, students took practice tests and their race cars were moved down a hallway to show their progress. As a final activity, the Kingsport Speedway was invited to come talk to students about hard work, dedication, and focus. Even though state testing was cancelled, the racing team was still asked to come and speak. On Friday, April 29, Ronnie McCarty, 2015 champion, brought his race car and spoke to students about being a driver. Students were excited and full of questions for the driver. Students also learned that Ronnie was a former Ketron student. The Kingsport Speedway team gave each student free tickets to their raceway.

Mary Hughes 2nd Graders Visited by Dr. John L. Hott |
Mrs. Warren's second grade science class at Mary Hughes Elementary school had a visit from Dr. John L. Hott, Director, Product Stewardship and Regulatory Affairs from Eastman Chemical Company. Under Dr. Hott's direction, the students created "Homemade" lava lamps using normal household items, which demonstrated 1) differences in densities, 2) entrapment of different layers, even within "like" fluids and 3) differences in state of matter (gases and liquids). Dr. Hott is the father of one of the students in Mrs. Warren's class. We enjoyed his visit and the opportunity to create a really cool hands-on activity.

Sullivan North High Band News |
During the four week s of April, the Sullivan North High School Band Intensive Studies class participated in "Sousa's March Mania," a tournament pitting 32 marches against each other for the Marine Band online community to determine which one is the favorite. The John Philip Sousa's march "The Stars and Stripes Forever" finally won the tournament.
Hosted and performed by "The President's Own", the pool of competitors included several composers and different styles of marches, all performed in the spirit of the band's 17th Director John Philip Sousa, also known as "The March King."
Throughout the competition, participants were introduced to marches they had never heard.
Band Directors and music educators incorporated the mania into their classrooms utilizing it as an educational resource, playing traditional marches with their students to expose them to new music while having fun and enjoying the spirit of the competition.
