Sullivan Central High School Robotics Team is on the "Cuttin' Edge"
Team #6219 (Cuttin' Edge Robotic) from Sullivan Central H.S. when to Blountville Middle School and Holston Middle School to talk to eighth grade students about STEM and the FIRST Robotics Competition opportunities that exist now at Central.

Students were very excited to see the newest addition to the Engineering & Robotics program taught by Jonathan Casteel at Sullivan Central High School.  Team leaders: Dillon Wells, John Lambert, JP Smith, Baxter Wells, and Kassie Rogers led class demonstrations and discussions on what STEM is, various engineering careers, college opportunities, and what students can expect next year when begin their high school careers.

The visit was a great success, and many of the eighth graders were asking lots of great questions about options that exist for them in the next few years of their educational careers.  Team 6219 talked with Tammy Wininger's robotic students at Blountville Middle School about their experience with BMS's Lego Robotics program and how it compares to what they can expect with FIRST Robotics at Sullivan Central High School.  Relationships were also established with Sandy Clark's VEX Robotics students and discussed how their competitions related to FIRST Robotic Competitions, which Central's team will be participating in during spring break this year at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Sullivan Central High School is very excited for the opportunities that have opened up for students and community members to get involved with through such a great and meaningful educational experience.  If you know of anyone who would like to support Team 6219 at Central or develop a partnership with the team, please have them contact Jonathan Casteel at Sullivan Central High School to begin one of the most exciting and productive relationships they will ever experience.

Sullivan Central Grads Come Home!
This month, two Sullivan Central graduates took time out of their busy schedules to come home to Blountville and speak to Central students about the importance of following their dreams.

John Simcox, class of 2012, is currently a Marine Science major at Coastal Carolina. He spoke of his experience this fall researching and tagging Great White Sharks in South Africa, and provided students with useful information about the field of Marine Science, a degree not often discussed in Northeast Tennessee.

Garrett Whittington, class of 2009, is an actor and director who has been in movies, music videos, and whose first full-length documentary, Effervescence, debuts at Northeast State Saturday, April 2nd at 6:00. The event is open to the public.

Both former Central students wanted to display their loyalty to their Alma Mater and to their home communitie. Their presentations served to encourage and inspire current Cougars to find their passion and set goals for themselves.

Sullivan Central Band Celebrates an Evening in Japan
Concert goers were treated to an evening in Japan a couple of weeks ago at Central High School. The Central Percussion Ensemble, joined by the ETSU Flute Ensemble, presented a concert of Japanese taiko drumming. The percussion students studied Japanese culture and taiko drumming through research projects, papers, and analyzing videos by Kodo, the preeminent taiko group from the island of Sado. The students learned the cultural and historical significance of taiko, how to play the music with the proper technique, and how to play the music stylistically correct.
