Sullivan County Schools Receive $48,000 in Mini Grants |
Schools in Sullivan County have received $48,000 in mini grants from Utrust. Sullivan County teachers were invited to submit requests for up to $4,000 each whatever project they needed most in order to do their jobs better. To apply for the grants, teachers completed an online request form on the Utrust website. Sixty-one applications were completed; 23 from elementary schools; 23 from high schools; and 15 from middle schools.
A Utrust Committee rated each grant request using five criteria: potential for teaching/learning; number of students or staff benefitted; recurring benefit; innovation/creativity; and critical need. The idea was to fund the 10 projects with the highest ratings. According to Dr. Dan Tollett, Utrust Administrator, "There were too many excellent projects that deserved to be funded. Twenty projects were so outstanding that they received near perfect scores. The committee took the 20 projects with the highest scores and randomly drew ten of them for funding."

Blountville Middle School 5th Grade Project |
In honor of Black History Month, February 2016, the 5th grade classes at Blountville Middle School have worked on several projects. Collaborating together, Mr. Timothy Laek and Mrs. Jada Sherfey have combined their efforts to bring more awareness about amazing African Americans from our past and our present. In addition to the famous quote search in Social Studies, the five-paragraph essay assignment in ELA, and displays dedicated to Black History Month, the 5th grade students wrote and mailed letters of support and well wishes to one of their current African American heroes. Robby Novak, aka Kid President, recently had another surgery to replace a rod in his leg. Robby has osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as "brittle bone disease" and has currently had more than 70 broken bones and more than 13 orthopedic surgeries. With all of the positive that Kid President brings into our lives, in Mrs. Sherfey's 5th grade ELA, the students were excited to write him letters of support, while working on improving their multi-paragraph and letter writing skills. Robbie is 12 years old and lives in a small town in West Tennessee, but he is known around the world as Kid President, the kid who loves corn dogs, loves to dance, encourages everyone, and works daily to make the world more awesome. To us, we call him "friend". Get well soon, KP!

Black History Month at BMS |
The 5th grade students at BMS researched various African American people from America's past and from today. After much research, they each selected a quote as a favorite. Each morning in February, these quotes were read to the entire middle school student body, giving other grades the opportunity to identify the author and submit for a drawing. Each day a winner was chosen and qualified for the grand prize drawing, which was done on March 2, 2016.
Above, Mr. Timothy Laek, 5th grade Social Studies and Science teacher, presents the winner of the grand prize, Hunter Antonito with two movie passes to The Pinnacle Marquee Cinemas, bowling passes for his entire family at Uncle Buck's, and Pal's Bucks for being the grand prize winner of the Black History Month Quotation Contest.
Congratulations, Hunter! BMS 5th grade would like to thank the entire school for their support and involvement in this project, which allowed them to learn more about the many men and women, who helped make America great!

Comments included, "Mr. Weiss is an incredible man" and "Martin Weiss is an amazing person." A freshman shared, "Back then it was terrible, and I don't think we realize how privileged we are today." What's Happening at Emmett Elementary |
Second graders in Mrs. Miller's class at Emmett Elementary "kicked off" our measurement unit by measuring our feet. We worked with partners by first tracing our feet on paper and then using rulers to measure the outline. We measured in inches and then in centimeters. Next, we compared the lengths to see who had the longest foot and who had the shortest foot. We will use our drawings later to create a line plot when we get to that standard. We had a lot of fun working on this activity together!
