 Sullivan County Spelling Bee Winners

24 students from across the county competed in the annual Spelling Bee competition this past Tuesday night at Sullivan Central High School. It took a grueling 11 rounds of competition before a winner was crowned, and that winner was 7th grader Kasia Oliver from Colonial Heights Middle School taking the title with the correct spelling of this year's Championship Word: "ecclesiastical". Finishing in second was 8th grader Aiden Ponder from Innovation Academy, and 8th grader Luke Icenhour captured the 3rd place prize. Honorable mention winner also went to 6th grader Susanna Norton from Innovation Academy and 8th grader Lucas Murdock from Holston Middle School. Several of the competitors in the Bee, including Kasia will be competing against school champions from across the Region in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in Knoxville with a shot at traveling to Washington, D.C. for the National Competition. Thanks to all of the teachers and students that made the 2016 event a great success.

 Ketron Elementary Spirit Team
The Ketron Elementary Spirit team is made up of over thirty students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.  The adult leaders of this group not only help the students learn great dance moves, they also spend part of their practice time discussing ideas from programs like, Say No To Drugs and Be a Friend, Not a Bully. These students are role-models within our school and are examples of what they have learned to the other students at Ketron. The students recently performed a dance during half-time at the Sullivan North vs. Cedar View basketball game. They also participated in the Bloomingdale Christmas parade.  Near the end of the year, this group plans to lead a pep-rally for the student body against bullying in our school. The group is sponsored by Angie Christian, Brittany Glover, and Chelsea Robbins.

 Miller Perry Math Fraction Projects

Miller Perry 4th grade students made math meaningful! Math in the kitchen is common and a real life experience. Students were asked to find a recipe with at least four fractions. Next, they were asked to double the recipe by multiplying so the recipe would make enough to feed the whole class. Finally, students were asked to divide the recipe in half. This would allow the recipe to serve a small group of friends. This gave the students practice with dividing whole numbers and fractions. Many delicious recipes were shared!

Sullivan Central Leadership Team Shared Some Love This Month
The Sullivan Central Leadership Team  shared some love this month. They hung "Take What You Need" posters throughout the school. These posters offer strips of paper containing quotes that either inspire, motivate, evoke laughter and happiness, or cultivate feelings of love and support. Additionally, thanks to a generous donation from All Seasons Storage, the Leadership Team was able to make over 1,000 individual Valentines (with candy included!) for every single student and staff member. The Leadership Team is sponsored by Mrs. Shelley Martin.
