Kindness Club at Bluff City Elementary
Last week, Bluff City Elementary held an after school "Kindness Club"! We had forty 4th & 5th graders that were able to stay and participate.  We spent our time making "pay it forward" ornaments, decorating Christmas trees, making cards/decorating cookies for some of our staff, and emptying pencil sharpeners. We showed kindness in many ways without expecting anything in return, and hopefully the kindness will continue spreading!  The "Kindness Club" will meet again in February!

Indian Springs First Graders Give Back to the Community
The first graders at Indian Springs Elementary have been excited about Christmas. Instead of giving one another gifts in the classroom, the children decided to give back to their community. Mrs. Conrad's class chose to donate to St. Jude's, in honor of a student being treated there. They raised over $150. Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Jessee's classes gave to a local animal sanctuary. The Pleasant Hill Animal Sanctuary takes in disabled and senior animals.  Director, Lindsay Campbell, and canine friend, Beetle, made a special visit to ISE.

Miller Perry's Zoe Barger Has Artwork Published in JC Power Board's 2016 Calendar
Miller Perry student Zoe Barger's art work has been published in the Johnson City Power Board's 2016 calendar.  Her art work was selected for the month of February, 2016. Her art clearly conveys that message of using electricity wisely and the calendar is printed and distributed in order to encourage community members to do the same. Ms. Jenny Jones, 4th grade science teacher at Miller Perry discusses the subject matter with her students and submits their artistic designs. This is the second time a student's art  from Ms. Jone's class has appeared in the Johnson City Power board calendar. Congratulations Zoe!

 Miller Perry All Pro Dads
Miller Perry's ALL PRO DADS met November 24 for a pancake breakfast. Fathers and Grandfathers came to school early with their children and participated in some games that included tossing marshmallows into their Dad's mouths! After breakfast and games, Pastor Robbie Crisp, ALL PRO DADS leader encouraged the Dads and Grandfathers in remembering how important it is to be thankful in all things.

Miller Perry Kindergarten Students Learn About Matter
Sean and Jessica Holton visited Mrs. Amanda Trout's kindergarten class to share science experiments about matter. Using dry ice, water and soap, they helped the students learn about solids, liquids and gas. Sean and Jessica's son Cade is a student in Mrs. Trout's class. Miller Perry is always thankful for families who share talents with our students.

Miller Perry Newspaper, Bobcat Enterprise, Has Been Released
The first 2015-2016 edition of the Bobcat Enterprise has been released. The Miller Perry Newspaper Team has worked hard to get the first edition out this year. Now, their goal is to produce a paper at least bi-monthly. The newspaper began last year after Thomas Buchanan*, Presley Sweat and Jacob McMurray approached their principal and asked if they could form a newspaper team. This year, these three boys have become editors in chief. Thomas, Presley and Jacob helped their principal create an application for new reporters that were selected from Grade 4.  With the 4th grade teachers' guidance and completed applications, Arian Mauk, Lanie Jordan, Angelina Kerney and Yssabel Thompson were added to the newspaper team. A special thanks goes to Keith Parker, PE teacher and Abby Williams, ART teacher for their guidance, support and skills. They are the teachers responsible for this team and their newspaper accomplishments.

Miller Perry 5th Graders Design a Catapult
Fifth Graders at Miller Perry Elementary recently had the opportunity to earn extra credit by creating a catapult designed to launch tennis balls or a mouse trap car. It seems we have a dynamic group of future engineers, they did an excellent job!

 Rock Springs Chorus News
Rock Springs Chorus sang at Remington House and Kingsport Town Center on Monday, December 14. This is the 3rd year students have shared Christmas music with the residents of Remington House. The chorus is comprised of 34 3rd -5th grade students who meet before school to rehearse twice a week.

 Colonial Heights Food Drive
The Respect and Leadership Team at Colonial Heights Middle School organized a can food drive.  Over 1400 cans were collected with Mrs. Diamond's 3rd period class winning the grade level challenge by donating over 310 cans!  All food donated was given to the Colonial Heights Christian Church for their food bank.  This was a great opportunity to demonstrate to our students at CHMS that by everyone helping we can make a difference in our Colonial Heights community.

 HMS/IA Beta Club Plays Santa
More than 40 students in the HMS/IA Beta Club spent a week playing Santa. Club members worked in conjunction with the family resource agency donating toys, coats, gloves, scarfs and non-perishable food items. The response was overwhelming! Students brought in over 20 coats and other cold weather gear and 2 large boxes overflowing with toys! Congratulations HMS/IA Beta Club on your successful service project!

HMS/IA Drama Team Presents The Seven Nasty Princesses
On December 14th and December 15th, the DReagles (a.k.a. Overly DRamatic Eagles) drama team from Holston Middle School and Innovation Academy presented their fall production of The Seven Nasty Princesses by Edith Weiss (presented by special arrangement with Brooklyn Publishers) to three rousing audiences (public performance plus two full school performances). The cast of 22 Middle Schoolers chose the production themselves, rehearsed a couple of afternoons every day between September and December, designed backdrops and the program, and chose costumes for the show. The play was a rousing success. An elementary teacher called it "AWESOME". A Holston teacher thought it was the best play production presented at Holston yet. The drama club meets completely after school (no class is offered during the school day) and the students participate because of their love for drama. However, there are academic merits as well. One cast member said that it helps her with her speech and speaking skills. Others enjoy making friends and being part of a family. One student quoted, "I love drama because we feel like a family but different people in a different world." One went on to say "The Fall play was epic, the spray bottle infected us all!" The DReagles is sponsored and directed by Steve Humphrey, a local community actor who also teaches math at Holston Middle School.

Sullivan North NJRTOC Spreads Christmas Cheer at Wexford House
On Wednesday cadets from Sullivan North Navy JROTC and members of the Sullivan North band paid a visit to the residents of Wexford House to help spread some Christmas cheer and get everyone in the Christmas spirit. The students played and sang Christmas songs and visited with the residents. It was a great opportunity for the students to socialize with the residents and a chance for the residents to visit with some young people from the local community. The residents had big smiles on their faces while singing along with the students as the band played some Christmas favorites. The students hope to make this a holiday tradition and visit the residents again next Christmas.
