Sullivan County 4-H Public Speaking Results

The Sullivan County 4-H, the youth development program of UT Extension and TSU Cooperative Extension, held its annual county public speaking event on Tuesday, December 8th at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education.  Twenty-four student members from the fourth through sixth grades participated in the event by giving prepared speeches.  The purpose of the event is to provide youth an opportunity to develop writing and presentation skills in a positive and caring environment.  Students learned about types of communication and the basic parts of a speech during their November 4-H club meetings.  Several classes then gave school presentations to determine their representatives to the county event.  Blountville, Bluff City, Holston, Indian Springs, Miller Perry, and Colonial Heights Middle had participants in this year's event.  Congratulations to winners:  Fourth grade-Presley Phillips (Miller Perry Elem.), Fifth grade-Rachel Niebruegge (Indian Springs Elem.) and Sixth grade-Fletcher Gibson (Colonial Heights Middle).  These students will have the opportunity to compete against other county 4-H public speaking winners at a multi-county event in the spring of 2016 at Bristol Motor Speedway.  A special thank you to the teachers and parents who encouraged and assisted students with this activity.

Bluff City Students Learn About the Titanic
Bluff City Elementary had a fancy visitor this week. Mrs. Nave's 2nd Grade Reading RTI Class will be reading "I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912". Before they began the book Mrs. Nave introduced not only background information but also dressed as a first class passenger to expose the children to fashion trends of the early 1900's. Each student will be assigned a real passenger of the Titanic to research that person and determine their class, the reason they were on the ship, and their fate.

Miller Perry Newpaper, Bobcat Enterprise, Has Been Released
The first 2015-2016 edition of the Bobcat Enterprise has been released. The Miller Perry Newspaper Team has worked hard to get the first edition out this year. Now, their goal is to produce a paper at least bi-monthly. The newspaper began last year after Thomas Burke, Presley Sweat and Jacob McMurray approached their principal and asked if they could form a newspaper team. This year, these three boys have become editors in chief. Thomas, Presley and Jacob helped their principal create an application for new reporters that were selected from Grade 4.  With the 4th grade teachers' guidance and completed applications, Arian Mauk, Lanie Jordan, Angelina Kerney and Yssabel Thompson were added to the newspaper team. A special thanks goes to Keith Parker, PE teacher and Abby Williams, ART teacher for their guidance, support and skills. They are the teachers responsible for this team and their newspaper accomplishments.

2nd Annual JROTC Flag Football Game
On Saturday, Dec 5th the second annual JROTC flag football game between the Navy Cadets of Sullivan North High School and the Air Force Cadets of Sullivan South High School was played on the frozen gridiron at North High School. The teams take turns organizing and hosting the game and is an event the cadets look forward to each year. The guest announcer was Todd Broughton and Coach Mike Copas served as the head referee.

The event was simple; a fun and friendly game of flag football between rival JROTC units. The outcome was one winner but an experience in teamwork, camaraderie and tradition that everyone benefited from. The idea of a flag football game between the two rival schools came from the instructors but the cadets are responsible for developing the rules, organizing the venue and setting up the practice schedules.

The team captains, Austin Adams from North and Austin Boggs from South, led their teams on the field. All cadets played their best and gave their all on the field. In the end South overcame North and was victorious on the field. After the game the cadets, instructors, referees, parents and guests enjoyed a lunch together that was prepared and served by volunteer parents and North cadets.
