Central and South Students Excel at UT Math Competition!
On Tuesday, October 27, twenty-nine students and four sponsors from Sullivan Central and Sullivan South participated in the annual University of Tennessee Pro2Serv Math Contest in Knoxville. The activities for the day included the FERMAT I exam, math bowl competitions, a math scavenger hunt, campus tours, and the opportunity to talk to representatives from different colleges and organizations on campus. Each school fielded two math bowl teams. Central's A-team members were Cassidy Calloway, John Lambert, and Dillon Wells. Central's B-team members were Austin Ramsey, Kassie Rogers, and Madalin Scott. South's A-team members were Noah Mitz, Elaine Brickey, and Connor Scarce. South's B-team members were Matt Montgomery, Scarlett Edmunds, and Katie Wilson. Of the four teams from Sullivan County, Central's A-team went the furthest into the double-elimination bracket. Both Central teams are pictured along with a picture of the South students on their campus tour. The sponsors from South were Tara Peters and Krystall Wallen. The sponsors from Central were Lori Hill, Jill Loven, and Holli Cox.

New 3D Printer in Central High School's Engineering and Robotics Program
There's an exciting new technology in Mr. Casteel's Engineering & Robotics classroom at Sullivan Central High School.  It's call a MakerBot Replicator Mini, and it prints out creations in 3D using a sophisticated filament extrusion process.

Equipped with its own web-based on-board camera; creating, printing, and even monitoring their print jobs is simple with this amazing new technology.

Here are some engineering students monitoring a print job.  The user-friendly software makes designing and printing their creations fun and easy.

The Engineering and Robotics program is headed by Central's newest faculty member, Mr. Jonathan Casteel.

Literature Lab at Central High School!
In English 11 Honors, students in Mr. Howell's class are participating in a Literature Lab to annotate and understand The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot, considered by many to be the crowning achievement in Modernist Literature. Across the room are stations containing different footnotes left by Eliot and explanations of each footnote, providing a summary of the allusions Eliot intended while writing the poem. Students are rotating from footnote to footnote making annotations on their copy of the poem, connecting the allusions to one another. Each individual footnote acts as a single, separate piece of information that connects to a larger theme tied into The Waste Land, as well as the overarching themes of Modernism. Students are shown a photo mosaic picture to help them understand that each footnote and allusion is only one small image/idea that connects to and makes up a larger image/idea.
The Waste Land is being read in conjunction with The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald to show how themes, symbols, allusions, and ideas from a specific time period and artistic movement are conveyed through different forms of literature and art. Through the lab-like process of rotating through allusions and their meanings, students are seeing how to participate in a step-by-step process of connecting literature to other pieces of literature. This also shows students how authors use the works and ideas of those who came before them to support and build up their own works.

Cory Howell is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and is in his first year of teaching at Central High School.

 Bluff City Middle Food Drive
Students at Bluff City Middle School collected over 2,800 canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Edgefield United Methodist Food Pantry for two weeks in November.

Grade-level home rooms competed each day to see which class could bring in the most food items. The 8th grade brought in well over half of the food for the food drive with the competition close for every home room. Mrs. White's Algebra I class won the competition for 8th grade beating Mrs. Evans's class by only 7 cans. Mr. Lahr's home room won for the 7th grade and Ms. Rasnake's home room won for 6th grade.

Bojangle's in Piney Flats is sponsoring a breakfast for the winning classroom in each grade.

Art teacher Jamie Hyder said that Bluff City Middle School has held a food drive every November for well over 20 years. She is a lead volunteer at the Edgefield United Methodist Food Pantry and arranges for all the food to be transported to the pantry. Edgefield UMC serves over 100 families in Piney Flats, Bluff City, and Bristol.

Christmas Came Early for the Staff at Ketron Elementary
On Monday, October 19th the staff and faculty at Ketron Elementary School received an early Christmas gift. Walmart, in conjunction with a grandparent of one our students, Michelle Kerney, donated $1000 to the staff. Due to the generosity of Walmart and the involvement of a dedicated grandparent, each grade level received $150 to spend on their students and the needs of that grade level. Mrs. Tonya Sowers and Mrs. Julie Nottingham were recipients of an additional $50 gift card for exhibiting dedication and care to Michelle's grandchildren.  The faculty and staff at Ketron Elementary are very grateful for the blessing we were given through community support. Ketron thanks Walmart and Michelle for putting our students first and working with our school to provide the best for our students.
