South Teacher Selected as Mentor Teacher for Caltech NITARP Program
Sullivan South science teacher Tom Rutherford has been selected by the NITARP program at Caltech as one of only two mentor teachers (nation-wide) for the program's 2016 class.  NITARP (NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program) has as its goal having teachers and their students participate as members of a scientific research team doing authentic astronomy research.  Each team is composed of four teachers, from various states, and their students.  Rutherford has been involved with the NITARP program since he was first selected in late 2012.

South High School JROTC Zombie Run
On Oct 29, South High Schools Air Force JROTC cadets hosted their 2nd Annual ZOMBIE Run.  This was a 3K and 5K cross country course planned and organized by the cadets on the South HS campus.  Along the route, runners encountered hoards of Un-dead Zombies.  The schools cosmetology program helped with the makeup and many awards were presented.  This year, over 80 contestants ran the course...and all of them managed to survive.  This has become a re-occurring event, so look for the outbreak again; same time next year.

CHMS Thanks Sullivan South Area Community Chest
Colonial Heights Middle School staff and students thank the Sullivan South Area Community Chest for their generous donation to our school.  They provided funds toward the purchase of MacBooks and a MacBook cart for use in the classrooms.  Thanks to the citizens of Sullivan County for supporting the community chest and our school.

 Sullivan North Middle Library Club
On October 28th the 8th Grade Library Club held their Book Celebration. Students shared book reviews about the books that they read for the celebration, created spooky bookmarks, and played Kahoot! based on questions from all the book reviews of the required reading for the celebration.   The students had a choice of seven different books to read for the Book Celebration, each of them had a paranormal theme.  The Library Club is open to any 8th grade student, and meets before school on Thursday mornings. Students discuss books that they are reading, give advice to the librarian about possible book purchases, help organize and set up book fairs, and help lead literacy projects.  The Book Club also often receives a free copy of a new books to read, and then spend time discussing that specific book selection.  Most of the books the club uses are donated by First Book!

Preschool
Mrs. Coffey's preschool class is learning their ABCs using yoga!  Using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning, the students see the letter, listen to the rhyme, and do the corresponding pose.

Aa - I am an airplane heading for the sky.  Lifting my chest, arms, and legs, I begin to fly!

Second Grade
Ms. Covey's second grade class has been making clay landforms for science and painting each of them.  They have made a valley, a desert, a plateau, and an oasis from clay and have made models of a coast and a prairie using foldables.  Great fun!  They also have been learning about the continents and oceans and will begin learning.

Fourth Grade
The 4th Grade students made story boards about a book they read the first nine weeks of school.  Students read an age appropriate book of their choice and presented a story board about it to the class.  From these presentations, students saw other books that they are now interested in reading.  Reading rocks!
