Cafeteria Mentoring Program at Central Heights
Central Heights Elementary School is working hard to prepare Pre-K students for lunchroom success with the new Cafeteria Mentoring Program initiated by Pinkie Shaffer. Fifth grade students have been assisting the Preschool class with carrying their trays, gathering utensils and condiments, and opening food items. This type of peer instruction teaches responsibility to the older children while allowing the younger children to learn Cafeteria Procedures.  What a success we have had so far and we look forward to the rest of the year!!

 Emmett Fifth Grade News
In fifth grade, we learned lots about photosynthesis, or how plants produce their own food. We learned that plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make glucose and that oxygen is also produced. Wait....oxygen??? Ok, we read stuff, we watched videos, welistened to scientists....but how did we really KNOW that plants produce oxygen? (It's an alien planet! Is there air?? You don't know!!! Ha ha, 5th grade!) So we decided to set up an experiment to show us without a doubt that plants really do produce oxygen during photosynthesis. We would see with our own eyes what's going on! We placed a few aquatic plants under a funnel with a test tube on top (see the pic for the set up), put the plants under the light machine, and......waited......and waited......and waited. Sure enough...there in the top of one of the test tubes...a BUBBLE OF OXYGEN was trapped! We did it! We could actually see the oxygen the plants made during photosynthesis! We even decided to let it continue during Fall Break to see how much oxygen we could get! We measured the bubble before and after the break and found that there was a HUGE increase in the size of the bubble! Way to go, plants, for making oxygen!!

#Socktober at Colonial Heights Middle School
Students at Colonial Heights Middle School joined Kid President in his social media campaign, Socktober. Since socks are the least donated items and the weather is getting colder, students brought in socks, gloves, hats, and gloves to donate to local homeless shelters. In addition to those items, the shelters identified a need for hygiene and cleaning products. Charger students were able to donate 1,032 items to Hope Haven and Interfaith Hospitality Network.

 Colonial Heights Art News
Seventh graders at CHMS worked with ceramics and paper mâché during art class. They made decorative ceramic pieces that can be hung anywhere to be displayed. These pieces are functional since they can hold small items such and writing utensils or even a small plant. The students chose their design to embellish this functional piece. The seventh grade students also created paper mâché projects. They had to select a universally small object like a battery or a key and make the object much larger. These were painted with acrylic paint outlining various details that brought the piece to life.

Operation Flip Flops at Innovation Academy

Over fall break, the shoes were delivered! The principal was so overjoyed, she cried. She told us that she would have to give them out or there would be craziness because the students would be EXTREMELY EXCITED! IA STUDENTS ARE LEAVING A POSITIVE MARK ON THE WORLD!!!
