Ketron 4th Grade Goes to Camp |
Ketron Elementary's 4th graders attended the annual Conservation Camp at Warriors Path State Park. The goal of the camp was to learn about the Earth and ways to take care of it. The students learned about the importance of recycling, conserving water, pollination, local animals and more. The 4th graders were allowed to pet a corn snake during the "Creepy Crawlies" presentation by Hands On! Museum.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation helped students to understand more about recycling technology through the "The Magic Recycling Box" presentation. Marty Silver, Warriors Path Naturalist, lectured on wildlife habitats, he brought along a possum, snake and screech owl. Campers learned more about possums from Bays Mountain Park Manager, Ken Childress' during his presentation "Possum Parade - Marsupials Live". Ketron students also: heard from Keep Kingsport Beautiful about herbs; Remnant Yuchi nation regarding native Southeastern Indians and their talent for making deer foot knives and rendering salt; Tennessee Department of Forestry on "Forest Fire Control" and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) explained how silt from building sites, litter, and excess fertilizer from farming can spread to our water supply. 4th grade teacher, Rachel Eads, said the field trip was incredibly educational and the students had a wonderful time.

Bluff City Middle Heritage Day Celebration |
The beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War started right here at Bluff City Middle School some 235 years ago! The Overmountain Victory Trail Association (OVTA) and Bluff City Grizzlies once again commemorated and celebrated our ancestor's unequivocal contribution to winning the nation's independence.
This annual event is part of BCMS's annual Heritage Day celebration held each September 24th here at the school. In addition to the OVTA, the event is organized by Ambre Torbett, Director of Planning of Sullivan County, and the History Department at BCMS. This event celebrates the victory at Kings Mountain SC on October 7, 1780. Major Patrick Ferguson of the British Army had warned the people of this area to "Lay down your arms or I shall march this army over the mountains, hang your leaders, and lay waste your country with fire and sword." This is all the men of this area needed to gather as an army and track down Ferguson and his army and destroy it in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Historians and famous Americans of that age such as Thomas Jefferson have credited this battle with leading to the end of the War and independence for America.
The Victory Trail of 330 miles is celebrated as the trails these Patriots took from parts of Virginia and modern day Tennessee with stops at such sites as The Pemberton Oak, Rocky Mount, and Sycamore Shoals. Bluff City Middle School was designated as an official part of the Victory Trail,
as part of the trail runs right through the school grounds! As is stated in the American History classroom, History Runs Through Us! Re-Enactors of the OVTA relate the story to our school each year in dramatic fashion followed up with a victory volleyfired form authentic muskets. The Grizzlies participated by submitting well over 100 posters, models, and essays as part of an annual contest. The posters and models are judged by Association member and nationally known western artist Richard Luce. Our students have the opportunity to feel a little part of history in addition to learning about it.

Colonial Heights 8th Grade News |
Recently the 8th grade Science students at CHMS received a gift from Sullivan County retired teacher, Martha Ward. She sent a box of monarch butterfly caterpillars with her grandson, Jimmy Morris. The students watched with great interest as the caterpillars made a chrysalis and turned into a butterfly that was released to go on its journey to Mexico for the winter.
This led to a discussion of milkweed, the caterpillars' primary food source, and why it is the only plant where they lay their eggs. Students learned that the milkweed has declined all across the United States, leading to an associated decline in the monarch butterfly population. The young scientists looked objectively at the impact humans have on the earth and the importance of finding a balance between being a good steward of earth's resources while taking into consideration the needs of humans for food, shelter, jobs, and recreation.

Sullivan Central High English News |
The author of The Great Gatsby wrote that he wanted his novel to be "simple" and "pattered." So before finding patterns and parallelism in the first chapter of Gatsby, Mr. Grindstaff's honors class at Central High School first found the pattern on each others plaid shirts. Madalin Scott says, "This project showed us how parallelism can be used to reiterate main themes in a novel. By repeating themes, we have a better understanding of what the author wanted to get across."
