Central Heights Third Grade News
Third Grade at Central Heights Elementary integrate Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.  Students read an interactive story where they used what they learned about cardinal directions and the compass rose to determine the outcome of the story.  The story's character found herself stranded on a deserted island.  Students made choices about whether the character would go N, S, E, W, NE, SE, NW, or SW as she tried to find other survivors of her ship wreck.

After reading the story, the students began designing their own deserted island.  Students had to plan their island and what destinations would be at each coordinate.  They had to decide what types of traps or rewards would be found at each location.  Students then had to complete the writing so that others in the class could go on the adventure.  The creativity in their planning was AMAZING!  Some students planned "Ice Cream Island" where each of the coordinates was a different flavor or topping.  One student wrote about "Motor Bike Island" where each coordinate was a different obstacle found in motor bike racing.

This was a great way to introduce or reinforce the steps in the writing process.  It was also a wonderful way to get those creative juices flowing!

 Emmett Elementary Teachers Redesign Classrooms
Teachers were given the opportunity to redesign their classrooms and make an exciting environment for the students and themselves. Teachers were asked to choose a theme for their classrooms. The theme had to relate somehow to the students curriculum. The new makeover to our school is focused on enhancing the learning of our students through excitement and stimulation.

Dr. Seuss was chosen as Mrs. Jones' third grade classroom theme. Reading groups have been arranged according to book titles such as "Green Eggs and Ham," "The Lorax", "Horton Hears a Who," and "The Cat in the Hat." The students really enjoy walking under the humongous red and white "Cat in the Hat" Hat painting.

Miller Perry is EPIC
Miller Perry is working hard to establish an EPIC school culture. Each Friday, for the first several Fridays, the students are participating in a school assembly to learn about respect, integrity and doing our personal best. Miller Perry has  a new BOBCAT Pledge and each day students recite it together. Each morning, the students travel to class while hearing a song that reminds of our EPIC goals. The students in this photo are about to travel to class while Aretha Franklin reminds them to have R-E-S-P-E-C-T!
Here is the Miller Perry Bobcat Pledge...

We are Miller Perry. We are family. We belong here! We treat each other with respect and kindness. We have integrity. We do our best. We ARE EPIC!

Sullivan South and Sullivan North JROTC Participated in Pre-Race Activities at Bristol Motor Speedway
On Aug 22nd, cadets from Sullivan South Air Force Junior ROTC and from Sullivan North Navy Junior ROTC participated in the pre-race activities at the Bristol Motor Speedway.  They joined in with other JROTC programs from throughout the region to display the large American Flag down on the race track.  These 2 programs have partnered in many local events to promote good citizenship, teamwork and an appreciation for our military.  Cadets on Saturday were able to go down on the track, see the drivers up close, and then enjoy the race from the stands.  The next morning there were some tired feet, but many smiles still lingered and a whole lot of lasting memories were created.
