Colonial Heights Middle Art News
Students grades sixth through eight all drew portraits of a partner with graphite. All grades learned about the proportions of the face, how to shade, and about value.
The sixth grade students drew a smaller version and then used four types of mixed media to embellish four identical pieces. The students used different colors on each piece that were then tied together.
Seventh grade students used only graphite to shade their portraits. Students were to show reflections of light and shaded areas of the subject.
Eights grade students shaded the face with graphite or colored pencil. Students used markers and colored pencils to create a Zen Tangle or pattern in the subjects hair. The subjects all had hair created that was abstract or not realistic.
All of the students had a great time drawing a subject other than themselves and finding ways to bring likeness to their pieces.
Sullivan Central Hosting Traveling Exhibition on the Progressive Movement
We are excited to announce that Sullivan Central High School will be hosting a traveling exhibition on the Progressive Movement from the The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History during the month of September. The exhibition will be located in the CTE building just outside the Social Studies wing. Students will be touring the exhibit between 8:00 a.m. and noon and visitors may sign in at the front office to visit the exhibition between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. during the month of September.
Description: This exhibition includes letters, cartoons, pictures, and broadsides that illustrate America's transformation into a modern, industrial society. During the Progressive Era (1900-1917), a broad-ranging reform movement worked to make government more democratic, to lessen the effects of industrialization, and to regulate business.
Sullivan Central hosted an "open house" on Thursday, August 13th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The event used a drop in format that allowed parents and students to stop by at any time during the two hour window. The open house showcased the work and recognition of the highly decorated CTE department, award-winning Key Club, and very active PTSO and PAWS organizations. The evening was officially attended by over 250 parents/guardians and there was standing room only in many classrooms as they waited to "meet and greet" the teachers. This was the first time in several years that Central hosted such an event and it was a tremendous success. GO COUGARS!
